  • Help please – definitive reflective regulations?

Posted by Hugh Potter on 5 March 2015 at 12:02

    Hi all,
I’ve got some signage to do in reflective and am wondering if there is a definitive data / regulation / specification sheet.

The signage is going on a private road so I really don’ think it matters too much, I was intending to use oracle 5400 to face it with, The customer has obviously spoken to a couple of other signs places or done some research as they’re asking the difference between engineering grade and promotional grade?

I assumed oracle 5400 / kiwilite / etc. were an engineering grade, am I wrong?

    thanks,
    Hugh

    Hi Hugh

Your client might have been made aware of BSEN 12899-2007 – (basic info below)

"From July 2013 any road traffic sign erected on a public highway, where a member of the public can legally drive their car, will need to be manufactured in accordance with a new CE standard. Not only does this affect signs on roads and highways but also in areas such as public car parks including service stations, supermarkets and retail outlets.

Components used within the manufacture of these road traffic signs, including the finished product MUST be CE marked in accordance with this standard. It therefore includes materials, sign faces, and finished signs

In order to comply with the CE standard you will need to be accredited to BSEN 12899-2007. This will allow you to comply with all the manufacturing requirements and be able to supply with the CE mark."

The text above was taken from Wm. Smith information that I received but it does cover the basic facts – they can help as they have the necessary accreditation – hope the information is useful, if nothing else it gives you a heads up and some pointers.

    thanks Craig,

I did subsequently find that info, a bit annoying as a few ‘old’ round and rectangular blanks I have in stock – ironically made by W M Smith some 5yrs ago, are not ce marked but woud’ve been perfect for the job!

it is more the vinyl I’m thinking of for now though, I do quite a lot of reflective signage and it’s got me thinking!
