  • help please applying glass etch?

we apply a fair bit of etched vinyl to glass (reversed) and were temporarily switched from spandex 5700 to Mac cal glass decor. applied widths up to 2m. Normally applied dry. the Mac cal could not be "lifted" once it made any contact with the glass – seems too sticky. 5700 was ok but generally had slight flaws maybe caused by stretching or replacing. For the mac cal we resorted to wet application. unfortunately taking up to 24 hours before removal of application tape was possible.
tried application fluids but end up back with water.
can you guys recommend the best materials to use?.
seems everyone is using 3m gold squeegees ?.

Eric, I use the 3M frosted crystals myself. Not a fan on avery, but I did try Oracal. Went back to 3M because I am more familiar with it.

The only wet application I do with frosted is if it is a full sheet (no cut graphics) and then I apply it with no application paper on it. I’ve never apply it wet other than that.

I use 3M gold squeegees too. Tried everyone elses, but the 3M is the best for the job in my opinion. 😕

    Cheers Mate

3M Gold is the best made nylon squeegee on the go, but… for window graphics ide suggest a decent make of felt squeegee, more so for multilayer work on windows DRY. it works a treat!
i really like mactacs etch, think it is the closest i have seen to the real thing, but agree its very high bonding and not very forgiving.

Ive applied frosted and etched vinyl both wet and dry, when applying wet I use application tape (medium tack) and squeegee most of the application fluid out once laid, then spray the application tape with a little application fluid, wait 10 mins then the application tape will come off no problem at all! Works fine for me 😀

even thopugh i apply dry i always use app tape on glass etch vinyl… just thought ide add that, i find windows in genearl can be cold, if this is the case the glass will make the vinyl a bit more brittle especially etch! the application tape helps stop snapping/splitting of the vinyl. it also helps prevent whitening.
