Help! Paths are cutting twice…
Posted by Simon Worrall on 22 January 2013 at 05:40Hi
I have a roland plotter and I am using windows xp with illustrator 10
I am trying to cut a file sent by a customer, made from outlined text, but the roland keeps cutting each path twice.
I have gone through the file with the white arrow, dragging all the paths to the side, to see if any are hiding underneath. I am unable to find any other paths.
Yet when I send it to the plotter, it goes over each letter two times.
I have drawn boxes myself to see if these are doing the same, but they only cut once.
WHat has the client done to make the paths cut twice? And how do I find the duplicates and delete them?
Simon.

Sounds like it’s got to be duplicates …
Are the sections you’ve checked by moving possibly grouped (in twos)?
Is there a duplicate in white that you can’t see?
Are there few enough segments that you can count by eye. Then select all and see if it tallies with your eye count?Neil

There is a setting in my software (Cutting Master) where you can tick a box to tell the cutter to make two passes, maybe yours has similar?

Hi Simon,
I had similar problem to this in the past.
It is probably being caused by the use of transparencies. One way round it is to flatten the artwork but that can leave a pale box around objects using transparencies. I never get the problem when it is a file generated by illustrator only when it is a customers artwork generated by corel. Thats not to say that corel is doing it wrong or illy is it’s just that they do things differently from one another and this is the result. Get the customer to send file as pdf that should work. It is a very annoying problem that doesn’t always happen and is only noticeable when graphics are in final stage being cut.Steve

I had a very similar problem (although it was in CD X6) the customer’s artwork had "convert stroke to outline" applied to it, this was then giving me two cut lines…
I hope this hasn’t confused things further.
Nick.

There’s a duplicate on top Simon when you ungroup.
Will I sort it and send file back? -
Crikey!
The ungroup option is greyed out when I open it! Wierd.
Yes please. Can you repost it here?

Try this Simon, strange file, only some of it is duplicated. Get back to me if this doesn’t work

Well that is very wierd indeed Harry. THere is now NO content whatsoever that I can make out in Illy. Nothing at all.
I am flummoxed. Thanks for your help anyway……

Might have been the way I saved it, try this

I cut direct from Corel using Roland driver if I accidently leave a path filled white it cuts twice, just a thought.

That’s better. It is all there now!
Thanks Harry. It is night time here now, so I will do it tomorrow morning when I get to the workshop.
But now to figure out why I cant see the duplicates!
Tim, I toggled between Preview and Outline, so any path with a white stroke should have shown up in Outline mode. Nada.

Apologies, Harry, I forgot to come back to this discussion and let you know how it went. 😮
It worked just fine that time. Thanks for doing that for me.I would still love to know why those paths were invisible to me, yet you could see them.
