  • Help on opening document issue.

Tearing my ever depleting resources of hair out here!
I am creating a large document for print and to make it easier to work with have split it up into a number of different files.
When I save one of those files and try to open it again, it will go through the motions but not open, it doesn’t pop up any warnings or reasons like File corrupted, etc.
The back-up will open fine though. But if I resave that, that too will refuse to open.
The document is made up of vectors and bitmaps from other designers and as far as I can tell all the elements are kosher.
I am wary of including it in the finished document in case it causes problems.

we get this… basically backup those backups before u loose them

Possibly loads of massive photos, i mean loads

ur hitting memory limits on the machine, corel doesn’t report it and just carries on leaving u with corrupt files.

Try opening the backup and then exporting as CMX. import the CMX into a new file and save that, try opening that and see if it works.
I have a soft spot for X3 as that was my first involvement with Corel but I like X6 better and if you have a modern machine an upgrade maybe the way to go.

do you have corel on another computer, does it do the same thing?
email the cdl file to someone and see if they have the same issue?
That should tell you if its the file, or your installation of Corel.

Are they read only PDF files?
I have no idea what would happen if you import a read only PDF file and then try to save it.

Cheers lads, ended up using the back-up and managed to get it saved to PDF for printing.
It’s curious because none of the other files where a problem, same size using the same-ish content (bitmaps and vector work)

I seriously need a dedicated Corel tutorial on preparing large files for a printer. I again spent half the night trying to meet a deadline and struggling to get quality files that where capable of reasonable upload to ‘yousendit’.

It’s one of those situations where ‘a little knowledge’ is dangerous. And I know a bit, but not enough.
    Any ideas Alan?

edit: The CMX solution didn’t work Alan, I normally convert any drop shadows to transparent bitmaps to stop them interfereing with stuff under them ( I find they can distort lines they are over, if I don’t) and when I saved to CMX and re-opened the drop shadows where all white boxes.

Transparencies and lenses are a major reason for very large file sizes, that coupled with the resolution set in Corel to 300 dpi for effects. Enormous file sizes can trip any programme and will add to RIP times. Corel and Illustrator can produce effects that trip some RIPS so always flatten where you can. I set the resolution to 100dpi for large format output 300dpi for litho this in itself will substantially reduce file size/save time and increase reliability. Even converting to a bitmap if it has a transparency you may have issues with some RIPS. Publishing as PDF, which may retain the transparency the RIP may not handle it. Generally I don’t have a problem with fountain fills but drop shadows can give problems. From what I’m told from a supplier Ripping an eps gives him less problem than a PDF that has retained lenses and the like and I know of another printer who will convert everything to one big JPG at the first sign of problem.

    Cheers Alan.
Sometime I get time I must post screenshots of my set up when publishing to a printable PDF, maybe I am doing something glaringly wrong.
