  • Help needed with Versaworks nested printing

Posted by Stephen Morriss on 12 October 2010 at 15:35

    Hi

I’m just having a frustrating time at the moment with a 5m long print layout.
There is 2 files, 1 is over 5m and the other is just over 4m and they will fit side by side on 1370 vinyl.
I’ve used the nest feature before and found it a little lacking but have usually managed to get some were near what I wanted.
This time however it’s driving me nuts.
The longer print is narrow so I want it on the capping station side and the shorter wide print beside it, that way when the printer is passed the shorter print it’ll only have a short distance to move the head as it prints the remainder.
Only the nesting insists on putting the long bit on the far side and I can’t move them over as it will not let you leave one over the other.
it won’t let me take a print off the print area
I can’t get the print to move down the page to make room for the other while I move them into the order I want
I’ve tried selecting them in a different order but that makes no difference importing them in a different order makes no difference.

Does anyone know how I can get round this as it can make quite a difference to the print time needed, maybe another hour of printing at the settings I’m using for these.

    Thanks
    Steve (very frustrated Grrrr)

    Stephen
I may be stating the obvious here but can you not just print them upside down?(Rotate them on the layout section) This would give you what you want albeit printing the back of the job first?

    Cheers

don’t know in VW, in colourrip just change order in the the print que.

if all else fails put the two graphics side by side in coral and send them both together rip as one

Doesn’t work like that Gary, you flip them upside down and Versaworks reorders them.

Chris you’ve just given the most obvious solution and I’ve done it in the past 🙄
Guess my frustration was getting the better of me 🙂

    Thanks

    quote Stephen Morriss:

So it does. I was upstairs when I answered and doing it from memory.

the real solution is to utilise the redundant space to print something else for stock, even if only a few no smoking signs or similar. so no waste
you still have to print 5m though so cant see how the extra metre will take that much extra time?

Very particular customer Peter so I’m using the best setting to make sure there’s no banding on a solid green hence the slow print speed.

I’ve plenty of stock already so I don’t want to waste both ink and vinyl.

    Steve,

I see what you mean. I have tried to do it and got the same issue.

I managed to get it to swap over though by a little messing around.

I go the largest item and on the layout tab, changed the size % to 10%, making it small enough to go to the far side of the other item.

I then moved the right item to the left margin. Then I move the item I just shrunk to be but up the the item on the left. Then I raised the scale using the little up arrows. If you just put it back up to 100% it then resets everything. I actually put 70% in and then when up using the up arrows in the scaling 1% at a time.

    It then worked.

If you want me to talk you though it, call me in Ireland on +353 86 816 2416

When ever I tried that Neil it just reset.

I set it down to 20% then moved the prints into the order wanted and then used the up arrow, when it got so far it all reset into the original order.

I’ll have another go sometime but I got round it with Chris’s obvious solution, sometimes the simplest are best :lol1:

I used to use Wasatch on my smaller Roland but it doesn’t support the larger printer so I’m using Versaworks now.
Mostly fine apart from a few niggles here and there

select the 4000 mm item and introduce at Y position 5500 mm, so you are making a 5000+5500 mm page. now you can play with left and right position of any item in the page. remember that you can lose the page dimension if you change the distance between items after you rearrange them. hope it make sense what I’m saying since English is not my natural language.

    Stephen,

The way I work around the problem is thus:

    a) Increase the number of copies of your large print (the 5m one) to 2 or even 3. This now resets the page size to accomodate all the prints.

    b) reduce the number of copies to 1 again. This leaves you with a large "blank" space on the page.

    c) Now move them around – move one print down, the second print across, and the first one back up again!

    d) Click the "align" tab if you want them aligned.

NOTE: Click the "GET MEDIA WIDTH" tab BEFORE you do all this. If you do it afterwards, it will align them like they were before……

The nest function really sucks on VW. Sometimes it puts prints on top of each other etc. I have learned to deal with it, but it still irritates!

    Hi Arnt

I tried that one as well, maybe I didn’t give it enough time to react.
