    Hi folks
I am really keen to try my hand at signwriting really for my own satisfaction more than anything.I have been inspired by what i have seen on here,my sign written van (1973 vw, CLICK HERE to view pictures) and my friend who has had to retire through ill health, a true craftsman.
Does anyone know of any courses in se england.
can you recommend a starter set of brushes (saw some on uk pinstriping)
Is there a water based paint ( im after an aged faded weathered look)and i guess this may work better than one shot.
    Any good reference books.
sorry for all the questions but this seems to be the place to turn to.
    thanks in advance
    Nick

I cant help, but glad you are going to paint the old dear rather than using vinyl, there are some things that just need doing right.

Hi Nick, right, where do we start…….

Have you any experience of brush lettering? If not I wouldn’t worry about buying too much kit at this stage. Get a No. 6 sable brush and a tin of 1 Shot, paint a plyboard yourself and start practicing.

Suppliers of signwriting brushes and sundries:
    Wrights of Lymm http://www.stonehouses.co.uk
    Gold Leaf Supplies http://www.goldleafsupplies.co.uk
or as you mentioned Pinstriping UK.

As for books, google Bill Stewart. Signcraft magazine.

I’ll try and find some links to tutorials.

    Hope this helps a little.

Sign-writing is a craft that takes years to learn. Even after 8 years wielding a brush I still doubt my ability. Please dont think you can learn it in a few weekends. But good luck anyway.

Am new to the forum and looking through old posts. Having built cars myself, I know these things take time, so if its still in the making I’m happy to help you through using whatever knowledge I have to help you achieve the best job you can. The job in question is the type of thing I have done literally countless times, so be assured I really can supply you with all the knowledge you need to give you the best chance. Ok, I accept I’m apprentiship trained and fully competant, but determination interest and care go a long way in themselves. You can do it!
