    Hi everyone!

I’m Beth, I live in Liverpool and I’m new to this website and to the sign painting/printing/making world. I could really use some advice.

After years of having no idea what to do with my life, I’ve finally decided that I want to become a sign painter. This isn’t just an off the cuff decision, I’ve rattled of every career under the sun when quizzed on what I’m going to do but now I’ve actually, finally decided that this is definitely what I want to do.

Now, here I am, fresh out of university with an Architecture degree, and I don’t know where to begin! How do I start my career? Obviously I practise at home, I watch tutorials, I read all these forums, but how do I actually find my way into employment?

So if anyone has ANY advice for me, any tips, anything at all to help me follow in your footsteps, that would be really great 🙂 Thank you!

Hi Beth – Welcome to the site. You’ve chosen a career that can be very creative and satisfying.

When you say you want to be a sign painter do you mean a signwriter (painting with a brush) or is your interest to get into sign making generally? Most signs today are made using cut vinyl although many are also done using digital printers. Either way it can be a very satisfying occupation.

As far as gainful employment is concerned – you either go it alone and become self employed, or get a job with an established company.

Well sign writing is definitely what I’m more interested in. But I’m aware that the market for professionally hand painted signs is a lot smaller these days. I imagine it’s probably best to develop skills in the vinyl and digital side as well as hand painting even though that is what I would prefer.

Welcome to the forum Beth, some colleges still teach traditional signwriting I believe so might be worth checking locally to see if there is anything in the way of evening classes.
