hi guys – two heat press questions if i can

the first is i am using flock (from victory at the moment – but am going to try xpres)
    anyway – the recommendation is;

‘Pressing Instructions: 150-170°C for 10 to 20 seconds. Remove the backing whilst warm.’

when i try to peel when warm – the glue from the carrier seems to stay on the flock making a complete mess with the flock flat and sticky, but if i leave it to cool – it peels of (takes some peeling) but leaves a perfect finish with the flock stood up as it should be.

obvious answer is carry on like that – but am i doing something wrong?

second question is about a fabric called meryl – uk leasurewear stock a line from a company called tonetwo who do a lot of ladies sportswear. it is like a lycra – and i wondered if anyone was familiar with it in terms of what you can – if at all – heat press on to it?

    cheers

Can’t help with the first question, but can with the second 😀
Meryl is a fairly lightweight synthetic sportswear fabric containing Lycra. I have used vinyl on it without any problems, heat 170, time 20 seconds.

    Hope it’s of help.

hey there i have some problems using flock on hi vis wear just wondering if you could shed light on if im doing something wrong.
I am heating the jackets for 20 -25 seconds at 175 degrees letting it go cool to touch then peeling off the substrate but it doesnt peel off in one complete go and sometimes brings the edges of the flock with it leaving unsightly edges missing etc.

Does anyone know what im doing wrong as sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt ?

Thanks from a frustrated heat presser.

Who told you to peel flock warm???
Thats is the sole reason you have a glue residue on the surface, you will also get the edges of the flock lifting slightly and have to repress it anyway, press flock at 160 degrees for 10 seconds, peel cold then repress for another 10 (you don’t need to use the silicon paper on flock once the backing is off either)
Always peel flock cold, the only material you should peel hot are either hot peel/split plastisol transfers or ultracut/duracut type materials.

In answer to your other question the material you need for that would be the same as you put on football kits or cycling Jerseys etc, flexi cut or extra flex, from xpres, (not sure what its called form other places)
This will stretch nicely with the garment without any distortion.

    thanks for the reply barbara

    quote Steve Underhill:

Who told you to peel flock warm???

cheers steve – i am going to visit xpres on friday so i should get a good look at their range – i’ll take some meryl with me to get some products

here is where it advises to peel warm – i switched to cold peeling as soon as i worked it out – but just thought i’d pose the question now out of interest. at the time i rang victory and they reiterated to peel warm.

Thats just crazy, the glue on the backing needs to cool down else its left on the surface of the flock as a shiny sticky glue, also flock has its best adhesion to the garment when cold too, when its warm its not solid enough to peel.
I would have a word with Victory and tell them their advice sucks.

If the Meryl has Lycra in it and the garments are close-fitting, I would stick with Xpres’s Ultra cut. Others are nice and stretchy, as Steve says, but a bit lightweight, and don’t wear so well – or so I’ve found, anyway. ‘Spose it all depends on your artwork. 😕 😕
