Head-strike : Roland SolJect ProIII. Help?
Posted by Jack OLoughlin on 19 January 2011 at 22:20Hello. It’s been a while since I’ve been on. I have something that I hope you can help with.
My printer suffered a head-strike while we were closed fro annual leave last summer. 6 months on and I still have not been able to get the Lc (Light Cyan) back fully. Other 5 heads have come back 100%. The issue is that it’s only missing 10-15% but it’s enough to cause banding in any of the blues.
I look forward t your suggestions.

Head strikes don’t always ruin heads… maybe knock them out of alignment, but you mention the other heads have come back 100% so i don’t think the head strike was responsible, it was probably just a coincidence, its more like a case of dirty heads from using dusty media, if you cant clean by any means its then maybe as Peter says.. replace the head.
What did it strike on when you was closed for annual leave ?

PeterPeter thanks for that but I am quite aware that buying a new head is an option. But, I am looking for solution that doesn’t involve the outlay of One Thousand Euros +

If the head has been misfiring for so long. and has not responded to cleaning and soaking, I doubt whether it can saved, I would love to proved wrong though, I have heard of utrasonic cleaners that can "refurbish" a blocked head but not seen any reliable accounts of these.

Thanks Andy. It was left in sleep mode but the media had curled up at the corners and when the system activated to complete an automated scheduled clean it struck the media. Only on my return a week later I found it crying for help. I am lucky I guess, that I only have partial trouble with 1 head when in fact it was not printing in any head upon my return after the break. I guess I should have turned it off completely. Take Note Lads!

I don’t think you should have turned it off completely Jack, but you should have removed the media, for one thing you wouldn’t probably have the problem you do now and for another, keeping the media in for a long time could damage the rubber feed rollers; i.e. they would get a flat spot.

Quite right John. Will know better next time. . . take no holidays and keep my shoulder to the wheel!

no, take your holidays but just don’t leave the media in next time 😉

I would take Ians advice and call in an experienced engineer.
Not being cheeky or anything – just speaking from personal experience. If you aren’t fully experienced with these machines you can end up doing more harm than good and end up with a bigger bill than if you had got an expert in to fix it in the first place

I have a maintenance contract, if I have a problem with a head, it would be in their interest to rescue a head rather than replace, they have never been able to get a head working after my attempts to do so, they do try, but end up fitting a new head anyway.
so from experience, better to get an experienced engineer to evaluate the problem, and advise accordingly,so fully agree with Phill

Put the printer in maintenance mode and put a small cap full of cleaning fluid in something slightly larger then the head and let the head soak for 15-20 minutes. Then run a cleaning cycle on the printer.
That’s helped me in the past.

Thanks Phil & Peter. Since the problem occurred I have had my engineer look at the problem and it was him and his advice that saved the other heads. I have heard of the ultra Sonic but can anybody confirm that it actually works? Thanks Jason – I might try soaking it for a weekend. I’ll try anything before I just blow 1K on a head.
-
Don’t dare leave the heads not parked in the capping stations all weekend. You’ll dry out your other heads and possibly capping station.
-
Correct. Thanks for that. I will pinch the inward tubes and fill the bathing station with fluid and leave it for the weekend. Maybe than I can give it a full power clean on that head. Anything else I can do?
-
for once i am agreeing with peter… but let it soak
my experience with ultrasonics is you can easily wreck a head if not careful (and other circuits)
