Hawes Signs – Post Office – YourBlog

Hawes Signs were asked by Richard Lock from the Post Office to image their new Head Office; this was to be Richard’s last project before leaving and therefore his instruction was to deliver a perfect finish. The office block covers 3 floors; each floor has its own identity yet still has a common theme. The design agency Hawes Signs worked with was HLW International and Hawes Signs dealt with a fantastic designer Mustafa .
Every single room had to be surveyed and measured by Hawes PM as not one room was as per the design document we were given, and when Hawes Signs surveyed they found rooms that were not even on the design.

The office block contains a vast number of meeting rooms, each room is named and has its own theme. This is reflected in the larger meeting rooms by having wall tex applied to the feature wall depicting the theme. Each wall is bespoke, with some of them having a 3D effect which Hawes Signs achieved by cutting out images of London landmarks in varying thickness of cardboard. Vinyl designs were added to all meeting room windows in a red and black manifestation with little icons representing various Post Office activities. The orientation of red line tells you which floor you are on.

Application of these vinyl designs was a challenge as some were placed on the outside of the glass and some on the inside, but as the glass is double glazed, positioning was tricky to prevent shadows and reflections. In addition all the door fixtures had been installed and Hawes Signs were not allowed to remove the handles, which meant all vinyl designs had to be cut around the handles and hinges. Some of the manifestations had cut outs in them which proved to be extremely effective. Hawes also installed way finding signs on all floors. The design brief was to provide a translucent acrylic sign with no visible fixings and flush to the wall. Hawes designed a hook rail system, which absolutely delighted the designer.

Hawes worked from the top floor down to the ground floor following the builder. The ground floor was still a building site by the time we were supposed to have completed the entire project. During a walk around in the building site Hawes found a few extra rooms that had appeared. A model post office was constructed on the ground floor which Hawes imaged in Post Office prototype fascia and new image signs inside.

Completion was met with high praise from both Richard Lock and Mustafa. Richard was delighted with the standard of the work, and Mustafa with how Hawes had interpreted his design and presented it as a finished item.
