Morning all, hope everyone relaxing on a Sunday !!

Just a quick one really has anyone wrapped or put stickers on a crash helmet ?
We do quite alot of racecars and getting more people ask if we would do designs for the helmets.

I have not had alot if dealing with wrapping as of yet although started doing more and more to try and learn.

Any links or comments would be great before I take a job on I may try it on one of my old ones first.

    Thanks Jay

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have looked at the thread and it looks more as if the recommendations are more for builders type of hard hats rather than crash helmets but the legal implications and manufacturer warranties are food for thought so thank you.

    I haven’t read the other thread yet…

if your still getting to grips with wrapping general curved shaped surfaces, wrapping something like the shape of a helmet is a bit ambitious.

one thing to consider. print the letter "S" on a white bit of wrap vinyl.
quickly, without really trying. stretch the wrap vinyl over the entire surface of the helmet. disregard bubbles and creases.
you will see you no longer have the same "S", but a distorted twisted version.
in allot of cases the print may even lighten due to over stretching.

successfully wrapping a complete sphere is achievable. but faced with the issue above… i personally wouldn’t waist my time trying.

another factor is that some manufacturers of helmets state that stickers should not be applied to the helmet because solvent or adhesive can weaken the shell.

I’ve done a couple of helmet wraps in the past. One on a mountain bike helmet as shown below, and one on a regular motorbike helmet. It’s pretty much impossible to wrap a helmet without joins, the trick is to be creative with the joins and incorporate them into the design somehow. The helmet below is wrapped in 4 pieces (two sides and a cover piece running down the middle and where the chin guard is) + 1 piece for the peak.

I would say this took about 4 hours to wrap in total + design time. The design is based on a retro classic helmet design from the early 90’s. Personally I wouldn’t recommend using such a geometric design as it makes the application a lot more tricky.

I know there are warning about putting decals on helmets etc but you just have to point out that it’s the customers decision etc. You could put together some sort of disclaimer if you really wanted. I have been wearing and putting stickers on helmets for years without any issues.

    Cheers,
    Owen
