its been talked about recently that sometimes a vehicle livery has to be done away from any power source.

So has anyone used a naked flame to heat vinyl or does anyone know what type I should look out for and what kind of fuel wouldn’t leave marks?

    Screwfix have these:-

Do you know how you light it? think you need it to light with one hand so its not on all the time, what does you insurance say about useing a flame?

    Mmmmm…

Haven’t looked into the insurance implications and it would be a pain if it wasn’t just flickering away all the time.

    It would be strictly outdoors.

I get the feeling its a bit of a no-no then.

I have use an open flame gas torch similar to the one you posted (with a flame deflector to spread it out & help stop hot spots) when out on site. ie. a building site to warm vinyl onto painted boards & take it off the side of a building 40ft in the air. it’s not something I would recommend – one slip & it’s scorched paintwork.

Trigger ignition & locks on too (IIRC)

The type of fuel is fairly irrelevant (as all burn clean) – it’s flame temperature that does the damage!

The gas ‘hot air’ versions are much safer where there is not actually an open flame coming out of the nozzle…where you get them is another thing entirely. (Think they use a catalyst)

    Tks guys

The no flame one looks good, I bet it costs a bit, i will look into it.

I bought one like dave and myself posted, probably the same sort of things thats in the video and its a bit temperamental but I will maybe give it a go as is needed 😕

Ive got an old corsa I can scorch for practice.

    James,
Some while ago there was a bit of video on the boards featuring Rob Ivers using a Rollerwheel thingy. He uses a trigger start gas torch during the demonstration, it looks to me that the model he is using is a ‘Bernzomatic Propane & Mapp Gas Power Torch’.
These are available from your local B&Q for about £40.00 and the gas is about £10.
I’m going to try one because although I work inside most of the time I get fed up with cables all over the floor. I think it might be easier than a heat gun because you can at least ‘see’ the heat with a flame – I won’t know until I try.

Funny thing I was out yesterday removing some vinyl using an old Taymar flameless heat torch.
Not to keen on the exposed flame torches. I don’t think Taymar do them any more.
Draper do one on offer from tooled up for only 9.95 http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=130110

The other type I use is a Camping Gaz Baby R camping heater.
It has a 9" satellite dish type reflector and burner which screws straight on top of a small Camping Gaz bottle and has a carry handle.
Very good for warming up about a square foot at a time.
Don’t think you can get them new any more – probably a safety thing.
Just found a similar item here:

The thing I like is that this particular torch turns on and off like an electric heat gun., it’s not particularly heavy, it’ll work upside down – it has some kind of anti flare feature and it not got any hose trailing so it is very portable.
I imagine that used in conjunction with a laser thermometer it could be as easy as an electric gun.
If you watch the Rob Ivers video he doesn’t seem to set fire to anything.
