  • hard hat labels safety issue

i am producing hard hat labels for a chemical plant , for a safety advisor to the plant.
i have done hundreds if not thousands of hat labels for over the years. but today he has asked me after reading the label inside the hat, which says the same as a motorbike helmet, that solvents, adhesives and paints may effect the safety of this helmet, should I be concerned, i am using Metamark md3, which I believe to be a semi tac product with no solvents in the glue,

this seem to quash there concerns but should i be asking Metamark to supply data sheets (a very grey area as they usually cover everything and scare you silly into not using any type of plastics product.)

Ha anyone else ever been asked the question.

Tell him (and I believe this is a fact) that most accidents to the head, on building sites are caused by falling hard hats, they are hardly ever secured by chin straps, and often fall of when workers look over a rail…

So perhaps sell him an addition label, advising of this danger.

Dont know the definitive answer though….

I’ve been asked the same question before by a H&S fanatic. 🙄

I just shrugged my shoulders and said:- "I dunno…do you want the stickers or not"?

    Hi
you are supposed to use a vinyl with a water based glue but i’ve supplied them on Oracal 3164 for the past 3 years & never had a problem. I just advise to have a logo on the front although i did have a customer who wanted a large logo on each side which i refused to do

I can just see it now. 20,000 bricks fall on a construction worker. Then the 200 ft crane falls over on top of the bricks. the man is dead as a do-do and it’s all because he had a frigg!n sticker on his hat. Never heard so much crap.

My full time job is at an Oil Storage Terminal where this issue has raised its head many times in the past.

You would be amazed at how many companies give Contractors a Safety Induction then issue them with a sticker to put on their hat to say they have been inducted.

I cant see it having a massive affect on the integrity of the hat but unfortunately in this day and age its just another way of manufacturers waiving and issues that arise through third party alteration of their equipment.

If you follow the letter of the law you are effectively interfering with Safety Equipment and a whole can of worms can be opened if people dug deep enough following an issue. I would be tempted to just issue a small letter advising the company in question to check before attaching the stickers, very few will bother but then at least you are covered.

I have been asked this several times, and even been asked for written guarantees which we refuse to give, suppliers will not give any guarantees to us on their vinyls. I think it used to be an issue that solvent adhesives would weaken plastics used on helmets but from what i have found out that is no longer an issue. We always use a vinyl with a water based adhesive just to be on the safe side. Because of customer concerns I did try looking into this and came away with very little information, and absolutely nothing in writing.
    Mart.

Thanks for all the info guys. Next time I get asked this question I think I’ll probably just shrug my shoulders and say:- "I dunno…do you want the stickers or not?"
