  • Hanging piece 3mm dibond – no holes -no glue – help!

Posted by Kate and Danny on 1 February 2007 at 11:13

    hi guys,

Customer is just having a simple 70cm X 50cm 3mm dibond sign that needs
to hang. ( above heads )

He wants the string/chain/nylon (or whatever hes using) to attach to the back somehow, as he wants no visible holes on the sign

He refuses to entertain the idea of some kind of adhesive to attach a hanging bracket ( as he’s paranoid it will give way and fall on the heads )

Any suggestions of what i could attach to the back and how?

    Thanks

    Dan

regardless of what he tells you, he must have something to attach the wire/thread/chain etc too…
if you cant have holes drilled at the top or anything visible from the front, then something MUST be attached to the back. it doesn’t have to be hooks as such, more discreet brackets are available, but still visible none the less.
fixing these would have to be adhesive of some sort, VHB tape maybe!
there are small brackets to fix at the top "edges" of a sign with little loops at the top. not sure where you would get them but they are pretty discreet.

Hobday have a rigid hanging fitting that will grip the edge of the board. Its called a 6mm rod sign hanger. Its meant for up to 6mm board but may well do 3mm. See http://www.signfixingsdirect.co.uk

You could always use an adhesive like penloc or VHB tape and then put 2 or 3 very small screws in. That way the customer will be happy as he will think the screws are securing the strip at the back.

Try looking for something from someone like UK Point of Sale, they do hanging strips for posters and banners so something like that might do.

    Hi,

If you have the facility to cut a U shaped groove in the back, make two plates exactly the same and stick them together with a cord trapped inside. If you can’t cut a groove you could use spacers between the two plates to create a hole for the cord.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best

How about folding the top ½" or so at right angles to the face? You could then either put holes in the top to thread the line through or insert small eyebolts?

You’d need to relieve the back of the fold with a V bit to ensure a decent fold.

be careful about the signs centre of gravity…it may want to tilt

I would recommend the same as Peter Shaw has…the sign rod hanger is made for this type of sign
