Some of the work we were doing in Germany. Colourwashing and handpainted signage on foam PVC
The outdoor sign was unfinished when this pic was taken.

the indoor wall graphic was a backdrop to the music stage and the client wanted it to be a fiery ball!.

All the colourwashing in the bar and down 5 flights of stairs was done in oil washes which is exhausting, I have shoulders like Fatima Whitbread!!! 😮

    Thanks John.

Neil, I have done a lot of this kinda stuff abroad over the years, and I created a lot of stuff in the workshop for different pub building companies……for Australia, Korea, Germany, Italy and America to mention a few……… at one time an Irish pub was opening everyday somewhere across the world. It has slacked off a lot now…..but this company keep wanting stuff done….and I like Germany….going to do two in Texas in the next few months …..if the price is right….always wanted to see Texas!….but it’s a single mans game and customers here don’t take kindly to you disappearing for a few weeks….not to mention the other half!!! 😀 😀 Now that is a war!!! 😮 😮

Yeah that stuff looks top notch. Very impressive. Which part of Texas are you going to? I’ve been to a few different places there. I have a brother that lives in Houston.

Thanks Simon….going to a place called Bryan/New College……about an hours drive out of Houston. That’s as much as I know about it so far.

You certainly could take a day trip to Houston or Austin if you had enough time as both are only a few hours away. Both of them would be great cities if you’ve never been. Both have really good nightlife / local music. Definitely treat yourself to a steak or some BBQ when you’re there (that is if you eat meat). Beef is a way of life there. They make some pretty mean Chili too! Hope you have a great trip.

    Nightlife? ….beef?………me?……never! 😮

Cheers Simon, I’m looking forward to this one.

Class harry, Like it a lot.
Just the sort of style I like very striking.
I’m actually getting round to finishing my sign this week with your idea in the middle so will post when Its done, its not going to look as good as these though, they’re tip top.

Out of interest what paints do you use to create something like that?
I know you said oils on the walls, but is it enamel on the main signs, I imagine it has to be something that can take a knock.

Phil, That reminded me that I used fancy Dana! 😀

Steve….I used oil based paints for all of it except the interior centre image….on the wall I used a primer called gesso and then painted the image in acrylics and even used some pastel….on the image outside I used oils for durability. All of the signs got two to three coats of varnish. btw oil colour washing straight onto a keyed sheet of fpam pvc is very durable in my experience….very handy and effective finish if you need one in a hurry.

Now back to Dana!!!! 😀 😀

Thanks for that Harry, Its always nice to know how things were created, and what materials were used etc, Id love to be able to paint like that, even though I did do a sonic the hedgehog on my guitar case that’s 15 years old in enamels and its still there. 😀
wasn’t bad, but not a patch on that that’s some real talent.
I hope you got a few beers thrown in.

think nothing of it mate, the position is well earned and your work top notch as always!

One thing i love about all the work we are going through for the UKSB’s awards is the" variation and level of work" amongst us all.

We have so many shortlisted already, so if anyone wants listed, "if not already registered" please just register free on uksb and post your work in the portfolio section. nothing else to it, if its worthy of an award, you will know about it soon enough. 😀 anyone and everyone can enter and as many times as you wish.
full list of short listed entries can also be seen on Signapp

    😳 😳

I said it before and I’ll say it again, this site and the facility to share work and get feedback from peers is incredible, but the ability to SEE others work is invaluable.
My dad would have loved to have had the oppurtunity to see that and to share his immense knowledge, a lot of that knowledge has died with him unfortunately. It is great to see this becoming a repository of knowledge and reference.
Sign writing and signmaking where very closed trades a few short years ago,(here in Ireland anyway) my dad would have known maybe 2 other signwriters, he had no trade guild as such, but he had signs in his bones.
We used play a game in the car, travelling to and from work…identifying a truck livery from a distance, who ever named it first won! 😀
My wife is crap at the game and won’t play it for some reason 🙁
