Had A break in at the unit
Posted by Mo Gillis-Coates on 26 May 2011 at 10:46Hi guys, had a break in at the unit last night… Fortunately all they took was a mobile phone, But it got me thinking how bad it could have been for me despite insurance. I back up some of my work stuff to a portable hard drive, but if I lost my emails etc I would be pretty much done!
So I was wondering what precautions you guys all take with your data, software, hardware etc etc…. any back up advice without breaking the bank?

normal customer files go to a hidden from view network raid drives which get backed up to two portable drives alternately. (one is kept in the van)
never really bothered with the email stuff a its not that critical to me.

Hi Mo,
we had the lot nicked a few years ago, computers, macs, and even back up hardrives, i now have bought from maplin a couple of 1.5tb hardrives that we use to back up and we take one home with us, so if it happens again at least we have logos etc backed up! I am looking into a mac system of cloud back up as well!
sorry to hear the bad news, gad it wasn’t too bad!Dan

I’ve got stuff backed up online but to be honest I have never had to use it so don’t know how good it is until the day I do. Think that was free with the ISP I use.
I also use google mail quite a bit which means that your emails sit on their server so not a problem if my machine is nicked or breaks as I can still access them all. You can change the header so all your mail goes out as whatever name you choose so people never see the googlemail com address.

ah i use windows live mail, I wonder if that’s the same?

Yes, storage in the ‘cloud’, as another back up anyway. Still need the local and the off site storage but if they go you would be unlucky to lose your ‘cloud’ at the same time.

Hi Mo,
I use drop box its free (up to a certain usage) basically it creates a folder on your hard drive and anything you save in there automatically gets duplicated and stored online as well as on your hard drive. For outlook you could create a folder within your dropbox folder and then save regular backups to this folder.
It works well for me particularly as there is an app for it so if you have a smart phone you can access these files from your phone, this has been especially useful when off site.
Cheers

We use MobileMe. All my customers are sent an email with a final artwork so even in the event of losing files and backups, I could still track jobs from the email attachments I sen out

If you have the option use IMAP e-mail setting rather than POP3.
IMAP keeps the messages on the server. You can then have the e-mail account set up on multiple computers, see the same messages, read/replied ones.
Loose your computer, set up the e-mail on the new one it will download all the messages from the server.

Hey, sorry to hear that.
Just yesterday i noticed a few strange people hanging about my unit, which made me think about security. Hardware can be replaced easy enough although a lot of hassle, it’s all the files etc that i am more worried about.
I’m a mac user and we have a built in backup system called time machine, this allows us to back up everything we want including external hard drives, I back this up to an external hard drive and take it home with me every night, that way if everything is taken or damaged in a fire etc, i still have a copy.
If you a windows user, google time machine for windows and lots of results will come up.
Hope this helps

hag a good chat with the forensics guy, he said that pc’s never get taken these days. They are too large to do a runner with and get caught with walking down the road, to hard to sell on as components and too traceable. As soon as they are plugged in to the network, bingo the police have a location.
The bizzare thing was I left my portable hard drive on my desk which is worth about 4 times the amount the mobile phone was they stole and they didn’t even touch it. They also ignored my digital video equipment and my cannon slr camera.
But it did make me think about peace of mind, so that if it happens again, I can just stick my arms behind my head lean back and think that I have it all covered.
I wished they had taken my lap top, I could have got a decent upgrade from my insurance…lol
