    Hi all,
did a sign for some good clients the other day, they have paid and were nice as pie! they have just phoned to say that some little sh1te has scribbled graffiti all over the sign in what looks like permanent marker! does anyone have any suggestions for the removal of this! the sign was printed vinyl then laminated?? as they are nice people i would like to try to help them get it off rather than going straight for the reprint? anyone had any similiar experience or can suggest anything than can remove marker that wont hurt the sign?

    cheers

Several things will remove marker (and fresh spray paint) – but depending on the type of marker it MAY leave a slight stain as the solvents in the pen / paint will have eaten into the laminate.

Isopropyl – takes a couple of minutes but works well.

A quick wipe with printer cleaning solution – and then IMMEDIATELY wiped off with the above / meths…or it may eat the vinyl.

If you are really pushed, T-Cut will scour the marker off but may dull the surface slightly.

Of course there are dedicated graffiti removing solutions & sprays…

    Acetone

My other half changes best before dates on her laminated signs every week.

Cleans off with Acetone then a wipe with water to neutralise any residue.

Might try that in the future…take it that it bleaches out the inevitable stain too.

Have used it several times on Vans vinyls and shops vertical substraights, Bleech is very forgiving, most of these so called markers are mainly water based inks. pour from the top , let the bleech run over the area, another little gem is Zippo lighter fluid, for markers and stickers with high tack backing.

To be honest probably no worse than any other area in the UK, we (Glasgow) do have pretty good graffti removal teams, who are quick to clean up with matching paint or spray removal, but it does cost the tax payers (us) money. If they had any talent, fine (they would find a blank wall), but to be honest, most of them can’t even spell, and the "art" is zero, We had one van (white) tagged about 10 times, we took photos and we sent the images to the cops who put it on a data base so if they are ever caught the "artist" they get a heavy fine for criminal damage (not sure if that has ever happened). The important thing is to get it removed soon after so the thrill of showing off to their mates is gone, then it is just a battle of wits , who breaks first, tag it remove it tag it remove it , set up high powered rifle with laser scope etc etc. In the US/ New York thay can get up to five years in jail and that does happen.

Try hair spray – It is magic for removing marker pen on furniture etc… so will probably do the job without any damage… 😀

Gavin you beat me to it.
Hair spray (I guess it’s the alcohol) works pretty well for removing permanent marker.
I would apply it to an old sock then rub it on the graffiti.
    Little monsters!

Can’t help with the removal but signs that i’m fitting at a level that can be reached by the little sh*ts i polish with either Auto Glym or such polish this means most things won’t bite in . If it keeps getting written on with marker then smother it in dash board sheen (silicone spray) ruins the markers normally they then get bored

I have written over permanent marker with white board marker to great effect for removal.

    Try that

I haven’t tried it since getting in to signs but I used to use deodorant when I was a kid to clean marker pen off surfaces, might also be worth a try.

    I think I’ll put t hat on my To-Do list :lol1:
