I was reading the Mail on Sunday today and some writer suggested we should all put stickers on our cars and houses saying "Get our troops out of Afghanistan".

It seems to me that a change in government in Britain will not make any difference as both major political parties seem to follow the same line.
I really don’t know for sure, but I suspect the majority of people would rather see an end to British soldiers being killed and injured in what seems to be a pointless campaign.

So my idea is this….why don’t we start our own campaign? What I am suggesting is that every small signmaking business that supports the idea should produce car stickers and offer these free of charge to any customer that shares this point of view.

If the support is there, pretty soon we may have vehicles all over Britain saying "Get the troops out". Maybe then the politicians will be forced to listen to the people they are supposed to serve?

    What do you think?

    Think you’re missing one Phill

    Maybe fourth choice should be:-

It’s more complicated than that – for gods sake don’t let the politicans decide.

What you have to remember is that in the same case as Iraq the trouble causing minority are not citizens of the country the fighting is in. From someone who has actually been on the ground AND not just reading the crap published in the daily papers it is worth while.

Yes it is costing a bloody fortune, but so far it has contained the trouble pretty much to Afghanistan and by-and-large got most of the farming regions back within Afghan control. Approx 95% of the worlds opium is produced there and is being hit hard, this is a massive funding source for many of the terrorist organisations, which hopefully is drying up.

The true national of Afghanistan, just want a simple life but without the threat of being intimidated. For years they have been struggling to survive and feed them selves because they have been forced to grow poppies rather than food, this is now changing.

As with most of the problems in the world they are of our making going back to the days of the EMPIRE. just look at the countries with straight line borders!!!

Quick question……Why did Iraq invade Kuwait back in 1990????

So as for the stickers I will politely say NO.

    quote Ian Muir:

Very simplistic, but right. Kuwait were stealing the oil from a distance. Directional drilling and sucking Iraq dry. This didnt come out until long after the event. The press will print pretty much anything to sell papers. They only do it for money, nothing more, nothing less.

I am of the opinion our troops should not be in Afghanistan.

Unfortunately politicians don’t take any notice of stickers, "ban the bomb"? did they? probably the most brandished sticker ever?

Public opinion rarely influences international politics, only power and wealth have a voice….

Because we can only listen to/read the media, the public in general don’t have a clue what it all means. All we hear is about the deaths of our troops. To have a viewpoint from Graeme who has ‘inside’ knowledge of the cause, effects and reasons is valuable, and if more widely discussed may help the public understand what is happening, and why.

Thanks Graeme, I for one found your bit of history very interesting, and not something I had heard before (because I hadn’t looked for it).
