Gerber GSX cutter problem
Posted by Tom Yorke on 29 January 2008 at 13:55Hello,
I wondered if anyone has ever experienced this problem with a GSX cutter?
When the cutter starts it sort of curves a bit off course for the first few mm of the plot. It seems to be starting at the wrong point. I only really cut large decals so I can cut the gaps with a scalpel but it’s annoying me now!
I have checked everything in the book and can’t seem to find the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated before I bite the bullet and face the Spandex engineer call out charge of £350 plus.

the carriage isnt off the rollers like mine was is it?
see if you can pull the carriage towards you, if it feels loose you will see it might be off the roller bar, abit of a push lift and twist and the little wheels will pop back on.
Just incase your having the same problem i was.

I don’t think so, I have taken it all to bits and can’t see anything untoward!
When you plot a box it’s like it has slight rounds on the start of each corner, then gets back on track within 2-3 mm. It would be impossible to do vinyl lettering, unless it was massive!

Make sure 100% that its on the roller bar.
Mine was doing just what your saying before i put it back on the roller.
Heres a pic of what my test cuts where like.
It now cuts perfectly clean cuts.
Also check your blade isnt showing too much, if you take the blade holder out and drag it across some vinyl it should have just enough blade to cut the vinyl and not the backing paper.
Also check your pinch rollers are on the vinyl correctly and not letting the vinyl move about.
hope this helps.

Might also be worth checking that the blade holder is not loose and free to turn.

Definitely on the carriage, I think the GSX can’t really come off the runner, and the blade holder seems nice and tight, again that is in a holder that is solid.
I have just done a test with the pen rather than a blade and there is tiny steps on the edge of each corner on the box!!!
Can’t upload the image of the test plot!

The GSX plotters gavr 2 blade settings. 1 for the drag knife and 1 for the tangelical blade (if that’s how you spell it.)
Check your settings as I think this is wrong. You don’t normally get a cut like that on a GSX.

I can’t find anything about setting the blade up other than tool force and depth.
It basically sits in a holder and that is it on the GSX?

Yes I know. It’s been a while since I used a Gsx. There should either be a setting in the software or I think it’s on the control panel of the machine. Do you have the manual? What software are you using?
-
I’m on a mac working out of Illustrator via MACimprint which is gerber software. The machine has worked for 5 years fine and I haven’t changed anything! I’ve been through the manual loads of times and tried all the x y adjustment etc.
I’ll have a look in the software windows!
Thanks for your help so far.

Sorry mate I don’t use a mac or the software you use. I feel sure there is a setting on the panel. I haven’t used one since 2001.

You can change the settings to pen, knife or pounce but I don’t think it’s that I’m sure it is something to do with the machine!

Pounce is for perforating plotting paper for signwriting masks. You don’t need to use that one. Your machine should have 2 settings as I said before for knife. Drag knife or Tangelical.
Give spandex technical a shout. They may email you or tell you over the phone. Might not though if you don’t have a contract with them.
