  • Gerber Edge Software Advice Needed

Posted by SteveCooke on 12 July 2010 at 09:57

    Hi All,

I have recently bought a Gerber Edge 1 MkII and am looking for either software or plugins for use in illustrator. Ideally I wanted to run it off my mac but as MacImprint on OS9 seemed to be my only option plus it’s a scsi connection with is real old school so have resigned myself that using it via a PC is my best option

So, I have a PC now connected but am missing the software, needless to say I am looking for the cheapest option. I do have PC CS3 but suspect there isn’t a plugin for use of it via this.

Does anybody have any suggestions on the cheapest and best options for setting myself up. I intend to use it mainly for stickers and graphics rather than large tiled images.

I do not have the sprocketed plotter so will cut on my Graphtec Plotter using cropmark recognition. So if anyone knows of a plotter for sale I would appreciate any info.

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

Steve you will need either omega, signlab, or flexi software.
signlab does not run with Mac os though, I think Flexi does, not sure about omega.
I don’t think there are any plugins for use direct from Illy as the gerber is unique in the way it handles spot colours, each foilf has varying heat settings, etc and bleed and traps are needed to produce multicoloured stickers.
Also you will find you will have alignment problems trying to cut on a separate machine that is not sprocketed

Agree with Peter, like yourself we predominantly use Macs. I don’t think Flexi will run it via a Mac anymore (maybe wrong) unless you can find an old copy.
Spandex were doing an offer on Omega which I think was only £700 for the latest version but its worth checking as we paid for an upgrade on ours.

You will also need to buy a cutter to go with the machine as it uses a bombsite marker and is the only way to ensure accuracy. This technology is very old now and you will encounter problems setting this up even when you buy the software. Good luck, if you have any questions please post and I will help if I can.

Thanks for the info, I know the edge is outdated but i did get it for a good price and has many foils with it, if i can get it going and cover my costs i can then think about a proper alternative when business picks up.

As i said before if anyone hears of a gsx plotter going for sale i wouldl be interested.

    Thanks Again.

Omega was previously called ‘composer’ in earlier versions. You should be able to get this pretty cheap nowadays, and it will run the edge.

Other than that, Peter is spot on.

If you can find a dongle that works.

old program, but the problem is rarely come onto the market, when people upgrade they cant sell sell the old version because the dingle dongle is needed.
The edge bought separately is common though, people kept the plotters when upgrading the edge, hardly ever see plotters for sale separately.

I’m sure Edward Mathiaus had one for sale, an Envision?

I thought that would be the case with the plotter, just gonna have to keep my eyes open for one.

Who is this Edward Mathiaus you speak of? Nothing showing on a web search, do you have a link?

    Cheers

We run our edge via Signlab. though we have a gs15+ we only use that for basic contour shapes, as we find it can be 4mm out sometimes.

We print reg marks 4 2mm squares, and contour cut on the summa. it reduces the print area, but on some shapes its better than the gs.

Harry the blade sold and set the cutter up to enable it to work.

Sometimes we have to overlay the reg marks with white or black vinyl some the laser can see them better.

Thats great denise, simlilar setup to what i am planning, glad to hear its a preference.

I got my edge running through flexisign demo last night, just need to get my workflow sorted so that the cutter can retain the profile cut.

    Many thanks, Steve

First test of stickers printed on the edge and cut on my Graphtec CE5000 using Crop Mark recognition, perfect.

Now then, my next question, how much do i charge, is there any freeware that can point me in the right direction? I know it used to be imbedded in the edge software i used many years ago.

    Cheers, Steve
