  • Full bleed prints mounted to board – Help, Advice?

    Posted by drogers4 on 6 October 2005 at 06:10

Just wondering what is the preferred method for mounting a digital print to a custom shaped board, full bleed, or all the way to the very edge of the board. Do you mount the print then cut the board with a jigsaw? Or is it wiser to cut first then apply? I have been doing increasingly more custom shapes etc. since I got a digital printer and I like the entire face of the sign to be printed. Also, when edge painting is necessary, is this done before or after the print is applied?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks

the way I would do it is to mount the print onto the pre-shaped board, then trim with a scalpel. if you apply first, then cut the board you run the risk of damaging the print. I would always apply the print last, any edge painting needs to be done first. again to avoid damage to the print.

I agree with Peter – if possible print your image oversize slightly (2 or 3mm allround) that just gives you a bit of play when laying down your print – then trim back with a scalpel

After trimming with a scalpel, I always find finishing off with a bit of fine sand paper in downward strokes takes the print or vinyl that bit closer to the edge where a scalpel cant go, hard to explain, but try it with an off-cut of vinyl and foamex, finishes the job off better in my opinion!

Thanks for the replies. I am always so paranoid about messing with the edges of the board/print because any error on my part could result in the delamination of the graphic alltogether. I will give it a shot and I’ll try the sandpaper. Thanks!

Doyle as already been said cut the board first, another problem I have found with cutting after applying the graphic is that sometimes the blade will lift the edge of the print and before you know it you have a ton of dust underneath it at the edge. I normally cut a piece of vinyl the shape of the board, apply to board to cut the right shape then apply the graphic.
Instead of sandpaper I use a fine file round the edge but just in a downward direction.
