Frosted Window Film….lots of weeding!
Posted by Michael Calcott on 23 December 2006 at 20:55This is a job that we recently completed.
The frosted bands are just 100mm high and we had to cut and weed over 500 of the icons from the band and than apply to the glass partitions on site.
We got the order confirmation on the Saturday, and had to have it all fitted in one day the following Thursday.
Not easy, but the customer loved it.

Hi Michael
nice work mate, that has to be one hell of a weeding task. not only would it be hard just weeding these, but done in etch would be a nightmare! 😕 well done! 😀
what type/make of etch did you use?
constructive crit:
this is just a self preference thing but on the narrow bands/stripes of etch ide have maybe missed a logo then a logo and so on… if that makes sense? i just feel its a bit of over-kill with the amount on logos.
also… on the entrance. i recon i would have used a minimum of "half the size" of logo on the window above the door. same reason as above.regardless… nice work and thank you very much for taking the time to post your work.

Yes looks pretty good to me, I must admit I am not to fond of weeding etch film, I try to avoid it if possible, especially things like logo’s.
Did you also do the bit above the bottom windows? Looks like it might be vinyl applied to windows but I could be wrong and it be a sign board. -
The architect wanted to have an icon every 100mm. We gave the option of less icons and just on the top band (especially given the time restriction), but in the end they had what they wanted.
Metamark Frost was used and applied wet. We used high tack tape. By the time, the last ones were done, we were taking the tape of the first.
I do agree about the size of the logo above the door maybe being too big, but again, we did not have much design input, just told what to do.
Yes, we also did the coloured vinyl on the reception windows. The glass could not be accessed internally, so a MacTac Turquoise Vinyl with text cut out was applied externally.
Below is a close up of the icon. And yes, it would have been easier to simplify the door area but they did not want to lose detail. If it would have not been possible to do, we would have told them, but it wasn’t too bad once we got going!

Why do architects think they are also graphic designers?
I agree with Rob, the stripes would have looked better with less logos.

Is weeding the etched glass a real pain?
I,m new to this but I have done some window lettering for my local kebab shop and now he wants a band of etched round all the windows thick with cut out food graphics.
I should him pictures of 8 assorted veg and a lemon I got as a free download but the wants better images and more of them.
Ive got now idea how much to ask for this job.
Your work looks great by the way!

Even worse when the kebab boys think they know best.
This is the first rough version I showed him and they want 3 times as much graphics crushed in( its just to crowded).
I think I might show him some lettering inbetween less fruit.
Michael! help. what should I be charging?
Merry xmass everyone. Jimmy

James, I find etched film a lot more difficult to weed but your best bet would be to get yourself a couple of samples to try for yourself, especially if the graphics your kebab shop owner wants have a lot of small pieces. You will need to make sure you change the settings on your plotter before you start as well.
You are going to have to be a bit careful what images you use for the windows because it might be very difficult for people to work out what they are if there is no colour in them.As for what to charge, I am the last person to ask because I used to do everything far to cheaply when I was working but don’t forget that etched film is more expensive than normal vinyl, it will probably take you longer to cut and weed than normal and if you haven’t applied etched film before you will probably take longer to apply it as well.
Don’t sell yourself to cheaply as I now regret doing it myself. I used to do quite a lot of take aways and they always seem to want everything for nothing !!! -
Micky, i hope you charged him well, all that weeding must be worth a fair bit on it’s own. 😮
