From Versworks to Wasatch OR NOT?
Posted by Jack O'Loughlin. on 14 October 2008 at 17:50HELP & HELLO! Only Joined Today. I need to know whether it is a good idea to move to Wasatch from Versaworks. I hate the inability of versaworks to allow the user to fully manipulate tiles in an effort to save material and speeed up jobs. I reacall wasatch 5.4 was really user friendly in this reagard. Am I wrong? The Upgrade is $500 if bought from Wastch Directly. They have been good to reply though. JackO.

hi jack
are you on versa 3 meant to be improved tilingchris
if BReT is reading this i would not know cos i have not got versa3 😉
-
welcome to the boards Jack,
better to post in the correct forum though the mods will scalp you
😉If you are uprading to signlab 8 Jack why not go for the print and cut,
no need for a separate rip, and will do tiles and nesting etc. with easepeter

Had a demo on Onyx ProductionHouse today, that supports nesting.
I know Shiraz can… a lot of RIPs can

I would stick to Versaworks for printing If I were you, would not use SL for printing, I have SL8 print and cut but but print with Versaworks.
Versaworks has nesting and you can move things manually if you need to.

quick reply mate, but are you using the latest version versaworks?
we use troop which i beleive is a rebrand of wasatch. its a great package but limited in some ways.
i recently watched versaworks demo’d at roland in bristol and found it to be an excellent package with various features that does not come with troop/wasatch. to top it off the fact it comes free when you own one of their machines is the cherry on the cake. our rip software cost us £1000 ontop of the price of the machine and as i said, has its limitations and doesnt seem just as easy to work.
a very useful tool in versworks was the ability to run upto 4 different machines using the same software/computer at the same time, and we did see this happening in front of us… also how simple it was to add a printer to the list.please keep in mind though, we are not using the very latest version of wasatch, so i do not know if there has been additions like there has been in versawroks.
anyway, my opinion is you get versaworks and the upgrade free and that’s what you currently use. i would upgrade to latest version if you haven’t already or invest your money in polishing up on versaworks at the Roland academy for the day, and use it to its full potential.
not saying you dont already know the software by the way 😉 just talking about the additions and stuff like that. 😀

What cant you manage with tiling?
I can do everything in Versaworks I’ve ever wanted. It’s only downfall is limiting copies to only 250.

Jason
i just make a multiple master file & the use Versa to multiply that which allows you to have as many as you like. If you use custom cut then you can keep the accuracy spot on over a very long runKev

Hey Kevin,
I do the same but then you’d need to have knowledge of the material width etc before going to print to maximize the material usage. So if I have do print 2500 copies I’ll create a file with the file laid out ten times and input 250 in versa works.

but if you put multiple copies into the one .eps then you can print more at once.

Hi Kev,
We’ve always had little niggles with cutting, particularly when doing a lam then back in for cutting. Have got a bit of a knack for this now but whats the "custom cut" feature you mentioned?
Best wishes

custom cut allows you to print x amount then cut, then print again then cut so that the cut length is kept to the minimum keeping the accuracy. i’ll have to try to post when i’m at the workshop to give accurate instructions.Kev

Hi Jack,
I upgraded to Wasatch softrip from Colorrip (similar to versaworks) and I must say I’ve not regretted it for one minute.
Ripping is faster, and the whole process is so much easier without having to worry about working around the restrictions.
I run two machines, both print and cut. Once ripped, you can change the print format for the same file without re ripping (but not machines). You can print the one ripped file on canvas, vinyl or paper, just by changing the profile. Colorrip had to re rip the file with every change.
I’ve only gone to 6.3 though which I got directly from wasatch too.
I’m not familiar with Versaworks, but changed because colorrip was discontinued.
Wastach Softrip will also keep a record of material used on the roll, so if it is a big job, you can check how much you have left on the roll when you are coming to the end (as long as the roll remains on the machine from start to finish) If you keep a record of usage, I think you can dial this in when putting a used roll back on, but I have to check on that.
Nesting is excellent too, you have several options – tightest fit, easy cut, super easy cut, and simple nesting.
Fades are better due to the new technology used, and you can use CMYKOG if you feel the need.
Just my 2c’s. I’m not sure how good the cut down version of versaworks is, but it is eons better than the cut down version of colorrip.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Shane
