Free Measuring Tape ‘what material’
Advice needed,
I need to be able to print a strip of material approx 1500mm x 18mm like a tape measure, only this will have large bra sizes on it, run 10,000.
it will be a free item within a special lingerie catalogue ( True ) is there a media that I can use in the versacamm so I can print and cut these items.
The tape measures might only be used once or twice, the main problem is that they have to have no adhesive on the rear, more like a film of some sort.

Great Idea Rob, but how will I cut them, I don’t fancy doing 10,000 by hand.

thats gonna be difficult… ill have a think. i thought i had a solution we did yesterday for thousand metres of vinyl… but that wont work for you. 😕

just my thoughts on large bras,How will this measure/gauge be packaged? folded, rolled up. in a box,
Will it need to have the sponsors name/ad on it
is it a standard measure, IE cms inches?if its a freebie its got to be cheap.
Dont know if you will be able to produce in house, it may be a job for a specialist, like a firm that produces tape measures already?

i thought same peter, even thought about if you had the tape material, could it be screen printed? i think subbing it to a manufacturer would be less headache and maybe more money made… its the cutting that will kill this every time ide think.

Would self cling work, you could then cut in on your plotter or would it be to expensive?

Sorry nick, I can just picture a lady with a 60″ bust trying to measure herself with cling film…. it may just stretch a little

ive just had a word with ed, he suggested the same…use a manufacturer save you loads of time and it will look proffessional too 😀

my that is big 😳 and exactly how could you measure? sorry Russ same as Rob and nik has said go to people that do them for that many you could probably do a deal most are printed on both sides,maybe yours only needs one side which may reduce the cost I really don’t know how they make them we have a few knocking about (not that big though :lol1: ) Peter’s mum knits

Yes it’s a freebie and it will only be printed on one side, this is just a short term fix as the bulk of the job (100,000 +) I have be told will be printed in china, but that has not been set into motion yet so time is the issue here.
I have not seen the artwork yet but believe it does not resemble a standard tape measure in anyway. When I was asked I said the only idea I had was to talk to you guys.
self cling or something simular might work, I might suggest a hands on approach so I can get a feel for the job 😀

Russ self cling won’t work, nor any sort of vinyl cause of the stretch factor so I don’t know what to suggest now (hand’s on 😳 )
maybe someone else will have a suggestion :lol1:

just thinking about the JV3… it is a print a slice (not cut) machine but not sure how close it will go…
You could command it to print the measure across the width of the machine and then cut each one off and catch in a basket.. very tricky to do… also need very wide printer, our JV3 is 63″.
I made a tape once on ours, on banner material it work pretty well and printing the width, you don’t have to worry about it being 1mm out.
Getting the JV3 to slice at 18mm would be fun and games… i think it will automatically add a top and bottom margin, but not certain.

There are a few ways these could be screen printed and finished.
You could screen print sheets, cut a lay edge and then guillotine the sheets to size. Another option would be to screen print roll to roll, slit down the width and cut the lengths.

You could print them on the versacam in multiple form on cheap banner material ( as Rob said ) but with small cutting ticks on them – then farm them out to your local print finisher to guillotine them

Your right Dave a few mil will not matter on the cutting from what they have said, getting back to banner as Rob said then making small tight rolls with ticks on or reg marks (good idea Glenn) and see if I can get them cut into slices. Paul I will put your kind offer forward again from what little I know so far you REALLY WILL HAVE YOUR HANDS FULL.

Russ, just got a poly material in today for cheep poster printing.
It is matt, will not stretch, prints lovelly and would make a great tape measure.
Depending how much profit is in the job, I’d be buying a second hand Neolt cutter, and paying the kids to sit there and cut them.
There would be good marging in it I’m sure.

Hi Shane,
when the poly material is cut to lenth as a finished tape then offered up to the lady, would it have soft edges as not to cause paper cuts, If so then we might have a runner.

Yes mate, I use it to print photo posters. No paper cut at all 😛
Problem is it is a chinese import, but your people over there would have something similar I’m sure.
