Football Ground LED Advertising Boards As Shop Signs?
Posted by John Cooper on 25 October 2014 at 11:50I’m sure everyone will have seen the brightly animated sign boards at most football clubs.
Is this sort of signage available for shop signs? I’ve never seen it used in this way so wonder why?
Cheers
John

It’s very "directional" with it’s viewing angle, It’s positioned to be optimal on the TV but when your at a match depending where you are you can hardly read it,
I’ve seen it used in Spain on some shops but not here. We do a lot of LED Pharmacy Crosses, even they are hard to get with a good viewing angle and they are usually only single colour, some are RGB , Due to the nature of the 3 leds needed to create RGB they need to be cupped in a individual cone to enable the effect to work, therefore reducing the viewing angle. -
I would agree with Ian, while I don’t do much with leds at all, I do go to the odd rugby match and the boards aren’t very readable unless you’re somewhere in the region of 20° either side of square on.

I’ve started seeing them used in the USA on road side bill boards & a few hotel / motel road signs.
View angle is about not to bad now, around about 100degrees or better – main problem I’m told is the cost, not sure how true this is from my sparky mate, but a 3 x 8 programmable colour led panel cost £15,000…

Thanks for the replies guys – all very interesting.
Cost was always gonna be a killer, BUT, if spending £15k on advertising brings in £20k profit – everything has to be carefully calculated.
What is the value of a brightly illuminated sign where the message can be changed at will to suit the time of year/merchandise one want to sell – they certainly are eye-catching but would they drive customers through the door?
As far as viewing angles are concerned, I’ll take some angle measurements from the shop we’ve just purchased, it might be interesting to see if it would work though I’m not overly keen on spending £15k on top of all the building & refurb work we’ve undertaken 🙂

A few shops in Bradford have this type of signage, looks different.

But does it look good? 🙂

In my opinion John, its the future, i dont think it will be long before we see more of these being used as shop signs. Does anyone know who supplies them to get a price for one?

Well, I’ve been to several football & rugby matches since starting this thread and I’d have to say that at the point one of these LED signs becomes unreadable, a common illuminated sign would probably have become unreadable before!
I took photos from several angles and the LED animated signs were good to quite an acute angle.

Just had to be done – I told SWMBO that I was spending the day looking for signage and she was all for it.
