  • Flat cut letters on light box

    Hi all,

I’m trying to do a lightbox for the first time. I’m hoping to achieve a lightbox look where the lightbox is say for example the words "STUART" is where the light comes through but the rest of the light box is fully blocked out. now that the light is coming through the words "STUART" I hope to add flat cut letters on top of this and hope to achieve the light as an oultline to the text if that makes sense. my queries are :

to block the rest of the lightbox i assume i just use regular vinyl in the colour which i want to be blocked. is this right??

how would i attach the stand off letters to the lightbox. I assume that the stand off letters are attached to the perspex/acrylic with something.

if i were to achieve a different colour on the outline instead of the natural white light say for example red, what would be the best way to do this?? would makeing the stuart area with back lit vinyl of the colour i want do the trick??

    stuart.
you need to use composite or ally with knocked out letters and acrylic inserts, a far better way to achieve the effect you want.

    Hi Peter,

Is there any way to learn about the ins and outs of what and how you can play with light boxes and learn of the various ways to achieve the effects desired?? i.e any online tutorials e.t.c??

Get yourself some clear and opal acrylic and experiment with different vinyls etc. You can get some great effects with backlit signs. I think what you want to do is probably achievable but you need to have a play about with it. Like I say, try clear acrylic as well as opal because there are some smart effects possible. As for blocking out light completely, you will need more than just one layer of vinyl – a blockout layer will need to go down first. White may work, black definitely will but white is preferable in my experience, as it reflects all the light back into the box and gives a nice even illumination.
