Flags and Mugs
Hi,
I have two small problems. Both using Sublimation inks..
First one is Flags… I have just printed my first flag. I have used proper sublimation flag material . I hoped that the print that I printed on one side would show through to the other side , but strong enough to be a reverse image of the first side. Not so…. How do I print a flag so that it shows on both sides??? Or do I have to print two pieces of cloth and sew them together???The other problem is Mugs.. I am buying a basic mug from a good supplier, but, when the mugs are put into a dishwasher the poly coating comes off. They are sold as dishwasher safe.. What should I look for when buying Mugs. Does a more expensive mug perform better????

There is a great difference between dishwasher safe and dishwasherproof.
Try to use mugs that are RN(Rich Neely) coated and you should not have any more problems.
As for flags all I can suggest is to print the second side with a reverse image, but be very careful to line it up with the first image.Gordon

I have decided to print another piece of cloth on one side and sew it to the first one. I hope its not too transparent. I don’t trust lining it up. I will post when I have done it.
As for the mugs. I live and buy in Germany. My German is not good enough for these technical things so when I am buying on line there is a language problem. I will ring up the supplier and ask. See what they say…

Earl try printing both sides of the flag side by side and then just fold in half and sow three sides.

What sort of machine are you using to dye-sub your flags?

Hi Earl,
Listawood Trade Supplies sell dishwasher proof mugs, I have used these myself and they have been through the dishwasher a hundred times and still look excellent. They also do a load of other sublimation stuff

Thanks Steve for the tip about Listawoods. I will look them up and ask if they have an outlet in Germany or thereabouts. Ive given up on mugs at the moment because they just don’t wash. Hopefully they are the answer. Which mug is it you buy from them.?
Thanks Gorden for the RN tip. No joy over here. They call every thing by a different name.
As for the flags. The biggest problem is that the whole design is on a black background with the design and script in white. Imagine a pirate flag. When printed in reverse on the back it just doesn’t line up. When printed on two pieces and sewn together the cloth is too transparent. In the end I found the customer had a line art drawing of his design and printed on black cloth. If only he gave me that in the first place.
I was sublimating using a D88 printer and then onto sublimation flag cloth.Thanks for all your help , I really appreciate it.

The mugs I buy from them are called Durham mugs they do bone china mugs but these won’t fit my press because they have a smaller circumference. I know that they have invested a lot in their business and are very helpful nice people.

Hi – not trying to hijack the thread, but I heard that Tams Durham had gone bust, and therefore can’t get those mugs anymore….they were definately the best quality IMHO.
Can anyone else shed light on this?
