  • FJ50 HiFi Jet – inconsistant print quality?

Firstly i’d like to thank uk signboards and it’s members for a very helpfull and informative website which has proven to be worth more than it’s weight it gold. Now to the question..
I have recently purchased a roland hifi jet fj50 which is proving to be quite tricky to maintain a consistant good quality print.
The main problem i’m having is when the print heads do a pass of the media, at the edge of the print the heads overspay ink beyond the print, mainly on the black. I find myself doing many head cleans. Are there any fj50 owners or anyone who has come across this problem and could point me in the right direction to curing it?

Sounds like a damaged nozzle in the printhead. Had this problem a while ago (also in the black), let a guy from Roland check it and they replaced it.

You could try to make your prints with the head direction set to “unidirectional”, it will probably help a bit, but will cost more ink and time.

    Sorry.

That is what i thought so i changed the print head and for a few prints it was perfect, but now the same problem has returned.
Could it be a damper problem as i dont have that problem with any of the other colours??

    hi and welcome

i think i see what you mean but how far away from the edge of the print is this over spray.

possible causes spring to mind straight forward head or heads at the end of its life, excess ink not being sucked away by the pumps or wipers not doing there job or the in coder strip has dirt on it. last idea heads running to close to the media. perhaps post up a pic of your test print..

    Thanks for your reply chris

Lets say for example i put on a roll of 24in banner material and was printing big black letters,20in high, running down the length of the material saying”HOT FILLED BAGUETTES.”, on the bottom of the “I” the over spray could be upto about 3/4in, but the dot at the end would have next to no over spray.
It seems to be that the longer the run of black, the further the over spray goes.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

fj-50’s are a fairly old roland, the one we use doesn’t use media clamps like the new ones. I had the same problem, replaced the head, never happened again. May be an expensive exercise, but ur problem sounds exactly like the problem I had. I thought replacing the dampers was part of the service of replacing the head though?
Also, i notice in long runs the head will “snag”on the paper if it buckles (due to humidity, ink density, why) and cause colors to drop out or spatter at the end of each pass, which is defenitely not good for the head. I think adjusting the head height would be a way to go, if possible. Are they large drops of black?

thanks for your reply shane..the print head in question has only had about 2 to 3 hours use and the same problem has returned..It dont so much drop the ink out, more like an fine over spray.havnt as yet replaced damper as i wasnt sure whether a damper could cause this problem…
    Thanks…

I see, i don’t think I have seen a fine overspray effect on mine.. Sorry I couldn’t help, I guess the only advice I could give is to manually clean everything with a swab kit, but i think you would have already tried this. Good luck!
