  • Fixing sign to existing posts – ideas please?

    Hi

I have made an 8′ x 4′ sign for a customer from Dibond with sign channel. They customer wanted to fit it themselves so I supplied them with some 24" band clamps. They have now decided that they want me to fit it for them. They have a tarmac yard with a fence along one edge which is made up of steel reinforced concrete posts. I have proposed to fit some 8′ hardwood posts to the existing concrete ones so that the sign can be seen above their fence. The questions is, what would be the best way to attach the wooden posts to the concrete ones? Drilling is out of the question as the concrete posts have steel inside them. My only thought was to use some kind of jubilee style clamp similar to the ones I have supplied them for the sign channel. Anyone got any ideas or come across a similar problem?

    Thanks

    John

Proper steel banding would be a better option than the screw banding IMHO.

John, how sheltered is the area that your looking to place the sign ? An 8 x 4 panel will take a hell of a lot of wind loading especially with some of the winter weather we get. Think I would be happier sinking a couple of new steel posts if thats an option.
The steel will only be 4 rods running through the inside so you could possibly drill holes in he concrete if they were fairly close to the middle.

Martin – The spot is reasonably sheltered, although I still have concerns about wind loading. The concrete posts are v strong though and are concreted into the ground and have tarmac round them so I am certain they’re safe. I just need to make sure my fixing method is strong enough to compensate for the leverage on the posts against the fixings.

I think I will try and drill the posts, but if that doesn’t work I will have to use banding.

    Thanks

i would screw channel to the timber the band to the concrete post. you can now screw through the dibond panel to the timber or just channel straight to the dibond the band directly to the post
