  • fixing dibond with vhb ?

Posted by Hugh Potter on 21 June 2007 at 22:31

hey all, got two dibond panels to fit tomorrow, customer wanted me to simply glue them on (into existing wooden frame) with gripfill or something, but i think this isn’t good, especially if i ever need to take them off and change images as planned.

would vhb tape be ok for this ? the panels are in portrait, 2090 x 435 and 2090 x 745. will it hold ? it’s being fixed to an existing ‘fixed’ panel, which is painted with vinyl letters on,

i’m more tempted to use a few small screws, but the customer wants the fixing method hidden and i can’t match the panel colour with anything from stock (sure aint buying 5m of vinyl to cut a dozen 10mm circles from either !

    suggestions ?

Hugh, if the paintwork is in good condition then VHB tape should be OK but some have said that you shouldn’t do it that way. There was a post about this a few weeks ago. Problem is if you use VHB tape you may still have a problem removing the panels and you are goint to have a lot of cleaning up to do before you replace them.
Using screws would be your best bet even if it does mean buying the vinyl.

I have been told that vhb tape is ok & that you can cut it by dragging fishing line down the back of the sign if that makes sense. We have taped & glued a few signs where the client wants no visible screws. All with no problem. As yet we haven’t had to move any. Guess we will cross that bridge when we have to. Cheers Mike

We’ve done it for short term signs. Wouldn’t want it up there for years. It’s actually pretty strong. I never liked the idea of tape but the first time we saw the dibond guys down here in their showroom they had tape applied to a frame and I couldn’t rip it off. I’d have to kick the thing and cause abit of damage. That same damage would be caused with screws anyways.

    3M VHB works a treat.

thanks guys, i think i’m gonna screw it, seems to make more sense. will use small screws, see if i can pop over the road and get some car touch up paint to match and just colour the screw heads !

Is it likely to get tampered with?
3M do DUAL LOK it’s industrial velcro that has plastic hook & loop rather than fabric type fastening, but is quite thick will probably add 3-4 mm thickness!!!

Your right to screw it up Hugh. The VHB is magic stuff and will hold all sizes of dibond signs to alu rail and onto other substrates, but if you apply it to a painted wooden fascia you are relying on the bond between paint and wood and you have no control over that whatsoever. If the customer really doesn’t want visible fixings they can either fit it themselves or get trays!

tape woulda been easier !! by the looks of the panel, it was about an inch deep frame, with a painted hardboard panel, easy… screw through the panel, done….. not !

the panel was some kind of plastic, which immediately covered a brick wall, rendered too by the look of the dust, it was hard as rock for the first 10mm or so, still all done now, will post shortly in the portfolio forum.

    thanks for the various advice.
