fixing alu-fame to stone mill
i have an 8×4 panel and alu-frame frame to fix quite high to a stone mill.
the visible lip of the alu-frame is not very substantial – but will be fine for a number of quite small screws.
i have been advised by the resident builder caretaker to mount a sheet of 18mm ply to the wall and fix the frame to this.
i can see the advantage of the ply taking out the unevenness of the stones and the ease of screwing the frame to it – but it just seems like overkill both in costs labour and an extra unnecessary layer on the wall.any advice suggestions on alternatives, or others common practice?
would screws straight through the frame into the high spots on the stone be ok ? -

Fixing the frame to the wall would be better without the ply behind, it will let the air circulate behind better. Space your screws evenly and pack out any hollows with wood or PVC.

What Mike said, but is the panel acrylic or composite. if acrylic consider fitting hanging strip & lower strip to stop wind blowing the panel out. With composite you can just make it a tighter fit as it doesn’t expand as much. You can also get a larger face trim frame which is ideal for larger acrylic panels.

i have never put a frame onto a stone building, and even though i take his point about uneven surface, i really didn’t like his suggestion of a ply panel.
it is a composite panel, so i was just going to let it sit without a hanging strip.
