Fixing a 6ft x 3ft banner to wood/brick?
Posted by Graeme Speirs on 3 December 2004 at 23:04hi,
I have a job to produce 60 banners as above to go mainly outside pubs.
Normally this would be a supply only job however theres a nice wee bit of cash in installing the banners 🙂
My question is, what is the best fixing to drill through the banner eyelets onto a combination of wood and brick (dependant on the specific pubs)?
I read an excelent post about using washers to support the fixing so I intend to do this however Im really unsure as to what is the best fixing and who might supply them?
All help appreciated.
Cheers

depends on the size of the eyelets but our banners come from trounce and i would use don quichotte fixings from cherwell, drill a hole and knock em in. No plugs or washers required.

peternot sure if this is tech term but we call those spit-hits… (thats if im talking about same ones :-?)
if its into stone you drill hole and place the screw with built on plastic plug. just hamer it in and its down. takes on the role of rawl plug and screw but faster and come in various lentghs for a good bite.
you can get in b&q warehouse… -
The ones i’m talking about are all plastic. A bit difficult to describe withouta photo, but they look a bit like a screw, only not spiral. I use them for fixing foamex or lightweight signs to walls, they work equally well in wood if its thick enough though.

Is it the ones listed in Cherwells catalogue as VK Plugs ? Have bought some to try, have to put up some relatively small signs, 1mtr x 600mm in 5mm foamex going onto brick, is it a case of drill the holes and bang in the plugs and thats it ?

Thats the ones, 6mm hole for the ones i use, but I think they do a larger one at 8mm
-
Would these be suitable for fixing 8×4 4mm euroflute/correx to brick?
-
i would maybe stick a washer over the head of the screw, if fastening euroflute/correx as it easy rips away from screws.
-
Pete, as Rob said, it is a good idea to fit washers over the screws if fixing correx. 😀
-
Rob These fixing are not screws, they have a 13mm head and Ihave fixed fluted with them without problem. Just be carefull not to hammer them it to hard so as to squash the board. If you are in doubt add a washer after all its not going to break the bank

peter,
do you know how much these items costs from cherwells ?
thanks

£1.25 for 10, box 200 £15.50+ vat black white and grey. if you get some the drill bit they sell is also a good buy, 6mm x100mm for wood plastic steel alli and masonary,
£3.78 -
peter, many thanks, most helpful Ill order some tomorrow and mention your name to get my discount 😀
one final annoying question, what length are these ? or do they come in different lengths? I have searched online and cant find a web address for cherwell.
again cheers
-
they are 40mm long cherwell dont have a web site pmyour email and I will send the brochure page.
Peter
PS you will be lucky to get discount! -
Oh I ALWAYS ask for a discount at Cherwells! And I always ask for a free gift. Last time I was there they gave me a pair of tweezers, although usually all I get is name calling. 🙂
-
your lucky andy all I get Is “Fine” in answer to everything.
bit peed though as they didnt sent me a calender this year, might be due to the fact that i didnt buy a lot off them, just a box ofvk plugs 😉 -
peter thanks a lot for that document, these are exactly what I’m looking for, just measured the eyelets on the banners which are around 10m so the 13mm head will alleviate the need for washers etc too which is a bonus.
glad Im not fitting these for a few weeks, bloody 100mph gales in Scotland at the moment !!!
again cheers 🙂
