Fitting signs into brickwork on your own.
Hi all.
I often fit signage on my own. Next week i have one to do, nothing huge 600 by 2000. I always work off ladders unless it gets silly (5m+)
Just wondered how you do it? does anyone have a revolutionary technique :smiles: .
I always work out where its going, hobble up the ladders with sign, drill and level. Mark two holes, back down ladder. Back up ladder drill holes and plug, back down ladder to get sign and screws, fix two points. Pre drill other holes, remove sign, drill holes …….etc etc you get the picture. It feels painful but with one set of hands its the best you can do.
Anyone use paper templates? or other techniques? ive always assumed that they are not too accurate as its hard to tape to the wall and as its not rigid the holes could not be accurately placed.

Drill hole top dead centre of sign up ladder drill one hole top dead centre of fixing position fix sign top dead centre with one screw you can now level and Mark other holes and pivot sign on the one fixing to drill all other holes and fit no need to take sign back down however depend on having light weight sign and no wind as you are relying on one fixing for a few minutes

I do the same as Colin. Always start with the centre of the panel then work outwards. If you can’t pivot the sign you can still avoid taking the panel down again by drilling the same size hole through the panel as the brickwork hole. The wall plugs can then be inserted by pushing them through the panel then into the brickwork. This works well providing you use screws with heads that are sufficiently larger than the wall plugs diameter or by adding washers. I don’t like using washers as they look ugly on the sign face but screw covers do the same thing and provide a neat finish

Yes the piverting is something i thought about but assumed it could be a little risky. Sounds like i should try this method to save a few trips up and down tho.

You can use tech screws no need for raw plugs.

Do tech screws work on brickwork? I thought they were just for ally cladding.

There is a masonry screw see attached, no raw plug needed makes fitting much quicker

Out of interest, what size of screws and colour of plugs do you guys normally use for fitting to brickwork?

New bricks yellow UNO Rawl plugs ( I only use Rawl plugs) older softer bricks red UNO Rawl plugs. With size 4/5 screws either 1-1 1/2 inch long.
I like this ones as they have a small lip that when using in plasterboard don’t slip through.

Red or brown plugs with 2 inch screws 9 times out of 10
