  • Fitting individual letters to uneven brick surface

Hi all, setting up a job at the mo and the wall in which the 19mm foamex individual letters is being fixed to, is quite uneven. The block wall itself is perfectly flat, but The client is facing the wall with a rustic red brick which has a very uneven surface, to give the wall an "old-style" look I’m guessing. The brick is actually more like a thick tile, and has a texture like a roof tile. (i will post a picture of brick up tomorrow).

The letters are quite intricate, each about 400mm high and will be needing about three to four jumbo pops per letter (15 letters in all). I obviously want all letters to be perfectly level and flat with each other, however I will be coming across issues when trying to fix the female pop to this uneven surface.

In an area where there is a deep recess in the tile, say, I will need to have the female pop at exactly the right level as the pop which is on a higher level. Would anyone have any suggestions as to how I will achieve level pops? Or possibly another form of fixing?possibly a small threaded bar system? I am outsourcing the entire set-up, from painted cut letters, fixed LEDs, and fixings.

As i said, I will post up an image of the brick ot give you an idea and to make sense of this post!

    My solution…

Fix a clear polished edged acrylic panel to the ‘bricks’ with nice chrome effect stand offs. Then add the letters to the acrylic with the stand ofs. It would look professional and purposefull as oppose to a lot of letters put on an uneven surface. Can’t see an alternative but will look at replies with interest!

Ditch the ‘pop’ fixings – Letters on threaded rods – glued into holes…job done.

I have done both the above but also you can just adjust or pack out the cups to suit, a bit tedious but with a straight edge or level you cant get them looking good.

Hi we did similar sized letters on a really uneven old brick surface a couple of weeks ago. Some of the pop in locators had to be left popped out or we even snapped the locator part off of the back of the letter altogether. Just adjusted them as some have said. It still looked pretty much perfect from the front/side view point. But allow extra time for dealing with the difficult surface.

Ideally it would have been better with ‘pins’ on the back of letters to go into drilled holes and glue them in with grip fix or something (As David is suggesting), this is what i am doing next time.

If you want to go down the packing out route i would suggest using rubber washers as the will be a bit more forgiving than hard plastic or metal packers/washers.

Havent had to use them yet but it is what I would do.

How do you guys use the threaded bar? Is there fixings on the market make it simple? Or am I just not right wakened this morning and cant think out how this would work?

Go with Davids idea on rod using chemical fixing and you will be fine

    Rich/Dave

Do you guys just locate a rod to the back of the letter push it into the hole and let the chemical fixing set at the desired position?

yes that’s what I do but use an automotive glue that allows around 2min to set giving me time to set the letter where I want and then letting go without it moving Rich

    quote David Rogers:

    Hi Dave,
when you say threaded rods, is the threaded part to give more grip to the adhesive?

    sorry if i’ve misunderstood

Sounds good – I would prefer that as trying to pack each locator out one by one!

    Cheers

    Cheers all,

While the threaded bar system will work better, I don’t have the time frame to change around my order so I’m going to use the pop fixings and have to cut per size required. Tedious, but will spend the extra tim getting it right.

Will let you know how the job turns out.

    Thanks
