  • Firetrucks yellow oracal reflex vinyl URGENT HELP NEEDED!

Posted by Jan Storgaard on 22 June 2010 at 16:42

Hello guys (and dolls) hope your expierience can help me out.

I have 10 firetrucks to decorate with reflex from oracal. They need lettering and a larger "S" type graphic (for safety at night).

Weeding is hell. I.E. If i make a text (4 words) its hard to weed and as time goes, its like the edges (cut) is reconnecting! and weeding gets harder as time goes. ANY hints would help. I tried heating and freezing with no luck, also tried to roll the vinyl tight to get the cuts to open up a bit.

AND taking out the inner part of an A is very tricky.

ALL kinda advice/hint etc. is welcome.

The "s" graphic is going on flat surface ;o)
Sry 4 not uploading image, but i dont know how. (dont have website to put it on)

    Regards
    Jan

are you using a 60 degree blade for the thicker material/reflective? try using a new fresh blade and adjust the force pressure for the material if its a thicker material. do a test cut first and see how it weeds.

Hi Matt, well dont use 60 degree, but will try.
Testcut with new knife i ok but it wears down rather quickly. Also experimented weth pressure on the summa. 125-130g.

Some wrote that speed should be slow – ill try that as well.

when we cut reflective or thicker material we use a 60 degree blade, i know some don’t, they use a 45 degree, but the speed and pressure need to be right. slow the speed down and do some test cuts to make sure the pressure is correct.

Agreed on the new 60° blade and slower speed.
Also I only use 3M Scotchlite reflective, I tried the Oracal and would rather have a root canal than use it again. It’s brittle and tears easily, at least the engineer grade stuff.

yeah, as jill says, the 3m scotchlite is a better material…..much better to work with, weed etc.

Thx 2 everyone. Ill buy some different knifes.

@Jill, ill test the 3M Scotchlite reflective, but you know some public authorities always (is always with 2 ll’s ) have preferences. It must be 3m or this and that ;o/

    ONE more ?
3M Scotchlite reflective – how long durability ?
    Oracal is 7 years.

    Best regards

Always has one L but feels like it should have 3.
I use 3M Scotchlite 280 series rebranded by Gerber.
    (I used to use a 15" plotter)
Here’s a pdf with specs, it’s 5-7 year high performance vinyl.

Around here most firetrucks are garage kept so it seems the lettering lasts longer, even though they do get a lot of washing.
Most fire companies request 3M here.
