    hi all,

went to open firefox (V2. something) yesterday and it opened a dialogue box which states that firefox is already running, and that i need to close it or restart the pc before trying again.

a quick call to the pc shop had me closing processes one by one in the task manager (nothing obviously ff by the way) and retrying ff after every close, until i had to restart the pc because i’d shut down so many things!

so… i downloaded FF3, it installed, but same problem, dialogue box upon opening,

i downloaded google chrome (crappy looking browser!) and told it to import all my bookmarks etc, but again, it can’t complete the process because it thinks FF is running,

so, i don’t want to lose all my bookmarks and seldom used passwords, so is there a way i can save these, un-install FF completely and then download a new copy, re-install, and import the bookmarks etc into it?

    cheers,
    Hugh
ps, this has happened on occasion in the past, but a quick restart always cured it.

go to Start (bottom left) > all programs > accessories > system tools > System Restore

once you have it open select a day from the last week that you know everything was working ok, it normally takes about 5 minutes to complete the restore……fingers crossed

To find the back up files for your bookmarks go to start menu click on Run write %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into the box and click ok this will take you to your Firefox profiles in one of the folders should be your bookmark back ups.

    hi Gordon,

it didn’t work in ‘run’ but i have found that file, thank you,

however, this is what i get…

Do you still have internet explorer? If so find Firefox folder 9eelprtx.a and there is a firefox file called bookmarks right click and open with IE.

i know most passwords, most little used passwords will prob be in emails somewhere! i prob had lots of junk that needed clearing out anyways!

    thanks for your help.

System restore doesn’t touch your bookmarks so don’t be put off using it in the future, it’s a handy tool if a quick reboot doesn’t sort out software problems.

    Cheers Neil,

probably just some fatal error within firefox, compounded by me adding a newer version over the top of it!

just realised how many bookmarks i need to try and discover again, prob hundreds!

    thanks again,
    Hugh

The firefox process is called firefox.exe in task manager.

Download the new version at http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Best way to grab your bookmarks is to open my computer then cut and paste %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ into the address bar at the top.

Then just copy bookmarks.html over to your desktop.

Re-install Firefox then copy the file back!

    Hope that helps!

    Dan.

thanks mate, all done now, it had somehow corrupted and lost all my bookmark info, there was nothing in there when i looked for it. the only firefox.exe process running was the one telling me that firefox was already running, if i deleted that then there was nothing left at all to do with FF, i shut so many processes down that eventually i had to manually restrt the pc!

thanks though, in furture i’ll back up my bookmarks.
