Finding the correct make/model of vehicles.
This has always been a problem for me, as customers dont always know which type of vehicle they own.
I ask for details, they say errrr "mercedes van". Or im given model numbers that dont even exist etc.
what is the best way to find the exact make and model of vehicles.
I was thinking maybe there is a website where i can input a numberplate reg and it gives me the info, is this wishfull thinking?

I understand what you say, but you cannot spoon feed your customer all the way, they must accept some responsibility in placing an order with you, if not and they need a site visit then charge accordingly, or maybe they should pop in with the van for you to see?

It’s a pain, just got caught out with this last week even though I seen the van. I fairness it was pouring down so I stayed outside for as little time as possible and wrote down mwb cause that’s what the customer said… muppet!

I have actually got people to measure their vans for me recently if they were unsure and take photos and then i checked it against the vehicle library disk.
It did seem to work for me, but i have heard some of these vehicle library disks are slightly out on measurements. Depends which make you have. I have the Impact disks and they seem really good.

Easy one.
Get the customer to send you a photo of his van – even one from a camera phone will do.
At that point, any signmaker worth his salt should instantly know what van it is. :peek:

Or on one occasion a lady when asked what type of van have you got replied "A red one" 🙄

My reply above was a bit tongue in cheek, and perhaps things are easier for us because we are doing vans every day, and we are maybe more familiar with them than the signmaker who only does the occasional vehicle. However I still think that a photo, carefully compared with an Impact outline, will identify any model of vehicle.
That said, we can still sometimes get problems, like when when the customer fails to tell us that his van has, for example, a tailgate instead of the standard twin rear doors.
We can still get caught like that sometimes and, although experience teaches you the right questions to ask, problems can still occur when you forget to ask them. 😳

I must have a blind spot when it comes to vehicles 🙄 it can be parked outside my window and I still say what is it 🙄 all I can be sure of is the colour 😀

The ammount of people ive done work for who are totel technophobes is ridiculous.
You obviously dont do a lot of work for builders/bricklayers, you ask them to take a photo and send it to your email and you may as well have asked them to jump through the eye of a needle. LOL.
Yea i think a visit is the best bet (in such situations) and charge accordingly, because people do give the wrong details..it happens.
Sorry for the ignorant stereo type ^ but its true.

It’s not just builders/ bricklayers, and their ilk, although I understand where you are coming from. 😀
Even specialist vehicle leasing company staff frequently don’t know. They are often just paper shufflers, who sit up in their fifth floor office, and wouldn’t know a van if it ran them over in the street. The usual routine is that they have to ring the supplying dealer to get the information we need.
Even then we have to make sure that we ask the right questions. For instance, we need to be aware whether a particular vehicles has an offside sliding door option. If it does then we need to know about it.
All part of the fun and games of running a sign business. 😀
