Posted by Stephen Ingham on 4 December 2007 at 20:52

Hi all, the first time i have posted in this section..i usually manage with software and stuff..

however, i need some help please.

a little while ago i had some problems with my laptop and it wasn’t instantly repairable, so the hard drive was removed and i slaved it to extract the files etc..

when i came to look at the hard drive content a lot of files were missing so i dug out my recovery software and did the necessary scan. Its seemed to find everything but when saved them on the master hard drive i seem to be experiencing a problem viewing some of the .jpeg files, they are there but when i go to open them i get a message:
"photo gallery can’t open this picture. This file format is not supported, or you don’t have the latest updates"
but its only a blummin .jpeg

any ideas? any help or advice is appreciated
    cheers

It’s either corrupted or you just got enough of the header information for it to know the file was a jpeg. Try opening them with some different softwa

    Hi Stephen

Bit of a long shot but have you tried renaming the file and putting the suffix.jpg after it. I had a problem with a file recently which was displaying the same problem. This seemed to fix it.

    details- image id- dimensions- size

    Stephen,
I have had a problem like this where recovered files would not open. Previewing JPGs in Windows XP displays "drawing failed". It seems to be that the recovery software does not recover the complete file or it is corrupted. Something to do with recovering clusters rather than files so the file is fragmented and the image is incomplete. The only solution I found was to run the affected files through EvJO Photo-Image Resizer. In the resize options choose ‘original size’. You can work on single images or choose a folder at a time for batch processing. The processed images will be readable but you will probably end up with lost or blank pixels at the top or bottom of the image. The program is free to download with a donation option if you find it useful. Hope this helps.
    Andy.
