  • External hard drive – options?

Posted by Gavin MacMillan on 22 February 2010 at 12:30

Looking a external hard drive, 500gb or 1TBish. Mainly for storing photographs and music. Photos with be stored there and edited via lightroom mainly

Been advised to get one with a firewire connection, I’m not exactly techy but found this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136056

This was a bit more than I was hoping to spend but getting the right thing is more important than the price really

    Opinions or better alternatives appreciated.

    Thanks, G

I’ve got a few USB external drives. You can get 1TB drives for cheap prices nowadays and they are all perfectly good. Firewire is a help if you want faster transfer speeds.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking of getting another cheap usb one to backup to but was keen to go for the firewire for the main drive

Believe it or not tesco’s were doing some great deals on external HDD a TB for under £60 and I think the 500GB were going at under £45. May be worth taking a look and see if Tesco/Sainsbury still have any good deals on.

I would say…if you are backing up…it is worth going for a better make. A right awful thing to happen if you lose everything on it cos it goes caput.
I have 2 external and another additional internal hard drive, a freecom and a buffalo and each one backs up everything I do every day.

Mine says WD on it and it works fine so far, touch wood!

That reminds me to do a back up now, cheers.

Yeah but have you thought about what you’re gonna do if the world gets hit by a gigantic meteorite…

…all your hard drive backups aren’t gonna help you much then are they 😕

a few years ago i bought a maxtor drive, it was a super drive untill it stopped working for some reason, something to do with a small cable, the IT guy told me to take it out of its housing and install it in the office computer and its now a super drive again, I also installed a 3rd drive in the computer as the original maxtor is now full and have a replacement external to back up also.

If you are really worried you could try this

not been tested for meteorites though lol but can sustain a fire.
