  • External edge lit!!

    Hi all,

I’ve a job for a customer that wants an illuminated hanging signs with his logo on

The sign will hang in the alcove of the front door to the bistro..

Logo size will be approx 400-500mm square..

My 1st thoughts were an illuminated slimline sign case, then I thought about an edge lit sheet of acyclic but not sure if they are suitable for outdoor application, although its not mounted directly in the weather, there is still a chance if wind blowing rain in the direction of shop doorway..

    any thoughts or any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Ade

Ade, not sure if it will help, but PrintOne’s website shows some Edgelit pieces.

    Hi Ade
I saw an LED type sign recently – sounds similar to your positioning. This was under a canopy to the perimeter of a shopping centre and is double-sided and perpendicular to the front of the shop.

Will PM you a picture as I can’t attach here.

If the electrics cannot get wet from rainfall I would think it will be OK.

    All the best

we found external edge lit doesn’t work, but if sheltered by a door inside it works.

we have done external edge lit’s we sit the leds in the tray that holds the perspex and fill with clear silicon to make "waterproof" and we also use external grade LEds and then silicon in the edge pieces as well!!

    regards

    Dan

I am not sure that we use the correct method!! As all of ours are home made! the clients love them and we have had no problems as yet!! We mask the perspex and shot blast to get the desired effect and then rough the egdes on a belt sander??

well we was using a fluorescent tube, so maybe LED is better as directional but the power of the sun is massive. When we did the test, we didn’t see the sign lit in daylight, thats what happened so we binned the idea.

Applelec do external grade extrusions and leds, the power supplies are also external grade.
    I have one right here.

A couple of years back Abbey National tried edgelit signs for their branches – total dismal failure!

Location would be everything with this type of sign – secluded doorway or sheltered area & it might work well – exposed location probably not!
