  • Equipment and ‘pointers’ for traditional sign writing

Posted by Craig Bond on 11 October 2009 at 19:17

I am turning 40 next week and have been asked time and time again…what do you want for your birthday?

I have always fancied having a try at traditional sign writing as a hobby (not to sell!) but I know not a lot about it as regards equipment or technique.

I have no problem with my design skills but would love to be able to produce these designs painted.

So if any one can send me pointers as to equipment (is there a standard set of equipment used or any books/publications that might be of use to me)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Try this link http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … c&start=10

To get started, buy a No. 6 sable and a tin of black 1Shot and paint up a white board. You should be able to find ‘Signwork’ by Bill Stewart quite easily or http://www.waynetanswell-signwriter.co.uk/page14.htm

Most important though is to practice.

I used to get my stuff from Handover’s, long hair sable writers, I referred the quills. Keeps signwriters enamel for paint but I think that is long gone.
