It means that the is a problem with the carraige movement relative to the encoder strip ie it is not where it is meant to be.

Could be lots of things and will probably result in the need for an engineer.

First things first take a cotton bud and some antistatic foam cleaner (rs components) and clean the encoder stip top and bottom. This is thin strip running the lenght of your machine and is just under the plate at on which the ink line runs.

Us the same foam cleaner on the bar for the carraige itself. Clean either side of the copper bearings on the carraige and remove any gunk off the bearings.

This shoulde done every other day by the way.

Switch the machine on and off you go.

If problem persits you need change the bearings striaght forward but still an engineer job rather than a maintenance you could do yourselve.

The white data cable wears down and may be shorting out.

The motor may be on its last legs or the drive belt for the motor.

Your machine is quite old an it is a bit like an running an old car something is always going to go. Replacing the lot would not be overly expensive £300 – £400 on parts plus the same on labour.

I had several encads and have rebuilt most of them before seeing the light and moving in to HP’s Praise be Hallelulia

I had a similar problem on my encad 850 a while ago, it was due to a roll of paper that had curled at the edge and the carriage literally stopped when it hit it. After cleaning the carriage and encoder strip thouroughly I have not had the problem since.

I had an Encad 850 for about 3 years and had this error
many a time, it was down to the self lubricating bushes
    on the carriage.
Check these and give them a clean looking out for worn
areas of the bush, you may need them replaced.

    hope this helps.

i think you could of hit the nail on the head print-man..i have recently bought this machine but have had it stored for a while and also recently found out that the previous owner used to oil the shaft that the carriage runs on,,with the dust collecting on this shaft from where it was storned i think the oil went a bit like a glue,,i’ve cleaned it a few times and it seemed to have cured it,,but every now and then the error message appears,,i think the bushes could have worn as the carriage has got what i would call excessive play..
    thanks for all your help,

    Jay
