  • Dry Mount 8’x4′ ACCURATELY

Hi. I am still a novice Sign Maker. What is the best way to accurately dry mount a vinyl poster onto 8’x4′ PVC and prevent it going slightly askew as you go down the sheet? Also should you print the poster with a hairline all around the edges or just use crop marks? Thanks

I would print it with a 25 mm bleed all round, then trim down after,
How are you applying? by hand or with a laminator?

Hi Peter. I am using a laminator. Is there a trick to positioning before so as to ensure accurate mounting. Thanks.

I dont do a lot of mounting, but the times I do, I place the print on the board, as square as i can, feed it through the laminator, for about 600mm.
them peel the backing and fold it under itself, then reverse the rollers to press the fist 300 mm then …

Hey just thought, google eazytaper, they have a demo video that shows you what I am trying to describe, it works equally well on other laminators

I don’t think you can get repeatable accuracy to within 1mm in 2440mm.

I think you always need some sort of allowance for going adrift, and trim afterwards, but the more practice you get, the better you will become.

If alignment is fairly critical I usually fold back about 50mm of the backing and hard crease it flat. Then line up the entire print on the board & rub down the exposed 50mm making sure the print runs true…whack it through the laminator and assuming you lined it up right it’ll be within a mm or so.

Just print it 10mm to wide for a bit of added assurance if you need to.

i would print 2450x 1225 and fit by hand as any more and the print will look pissssssed. i can’t do it acutely enough by laminator

the other thing is quite a lot of prints will not be exactly the length riped at due to feed calibration or lack of it.

We dont tend to use the laminator for larger scale mounting, small stuff okay but a panel this size we will hand laminate in a clean environment, lay the panel out, tape it near start point, release bottome area and adhere then off you go taking the release liner at an angle. Clean the board first with meths and then off you go with a felt. Also handy to have an airline as you can use this to quickly blow the pvc panel free of any residual dust that may have settled before you start. Good luck!

I open up my rollers. I place in my board half way. One guy on one end and one guy on the other. Square the print to the board. Once your happy close the rollers. Do a dry run see if the print is moving. If not then apply as Peter outlined. We always use a bleed too.
