DONT try this at home!
Hi folks
I’m just making this post to say the next demo to be posted won’t be until Sunday or Tuesday evening. But I should manage to post the details of the winner of the t-shirt contest for the case of beer. 😛
The reason is, I had a bit of a serious accident at work today. After drilling a hole in panatrim I quickly sat down my powerdril to lift a rivet gun. In doing so the drill slid along the metal worktop and hit my other hand “still spinning”. The drill bit passed thru my finger and out the other side about 2 inches.. In shock & bleeding bad, I had to knock the drill into reverse and remove the drill bit from my finger. Not a pretty site or something I wish to do again.. From there I spent most the day in hospital and heavily sedated.
I am not long woke now & feeling a little groggy but I am fine.
Anyway.. lucky for me the drill bit only grazed the bone and didnt cut tendants etc so other than a whole my pencil could pass thru and chewed flesh eather side, i am a lucky lad 😉 -

So sorry to hear of your boo-boo Rob.
Just goes to show you how quickly things can go wrong!
I hope you will be on the mend soon!

bloody horrible when that happens, though i’ve only experienced a stanley blade nearly through the finger!! nasty!! 😮

I was also thinking that you’re lucky you weren’t
up on a scaffold when it happened.
I got 10 stitches once when my hair got caught
in an electric sander.

I’m still cringeing from the thought of it Rob. I ran my thumb over a circular saw blade once – there was bone showing and everything. One thing’s for sure, I bet you won’t do that again. Are you going to countersink the hole?

best of it was.. when i was getting my jags.. 2 between my knuckles, 1 in the arm and another for the drip they put me on.. i was screaming like a baby.
saying not another one! arggh thats a big one! the doctor laughed and said, “mate, you just stuck a 5mm drill bit through your finger & then turned the drill on in reverse and pulled it back ou.. what the heck are you winging at some tiny needles for..” i quickly said in my deepest voice.. “oh yeh.. of course of course”, whilst blushing coz a nurse was standing near me that i didnt see 😳 😳 😆 -
Some things happen so quickly you just end up looking at the result.

on a side note if that had been our work HS &E would be down on me risk assesments would have to be shown, proper ppe etc the list goes on it seems a pain when you are doing it all and it does make jobs last a lot longer but one thing it does do is stop incidents like this by changing the way they look at and execute jobs.

Sorry to hear about your accident Rob. These things catch you out on occasion no matter how careful you try to be. I hope it doesn’t impair your work too much in the meantime and there is no long lasting damage. 😀

What type of drill bit was it Rob? I drilled my own finger once whilst fitting a couple of signs, (in a bookies office full of betting types). In the true fashion of a “macho man” I silently left the building with, what I hoped was a polite smile on my face but probably more resembled the stifled screaming face of “Sylvester the Cat” when trying not to wake up the dog after having his tail set on fire. I dutifully returned to the job about 10 mins or so later, a couple of pints of blood having spilled on the floor of my van………(ok a few drops). Didn’t have a medical kit so it was tissue and masking tape…….and a finger the size of a giant brotwurst. (Hospital?….we used to dream going to hospitals).

That had to hurt though! Thats one step by step I won’t be following though 🙄 😉

I hate the sight of blood and needles (no need for anaesthetic injections for me, just show me a needle and I keel over)

I remember when I did my own “finger removal” with a stanley knife you seem to get this burst of energy coupled with pain relief. Normally I cant stand the sight of my own blood but the first thing I said was “Oh f***ing great I’ve cut my finger off” but I didnt collapse on the floor like a gibbering wreck!
The best one was when I was working on my own in our cabin, I’d laid a load of graphics onto an 4′ x 2′ piece of board and needed to work the other side, so I picked it up and span it round, managing to hit my neck on the way.
I turned round to the door (glazed) and saw red droplets splattered all up the glass and the workwork and instantly came to the conclusion that I’d cut through my jugular. I ran into the workshops and found one of the girls and shouted “I’ve cut through my neck, does it look bad?” “No, theres nowt wrong with it” When I went back out it turned out I just hadnt noticed the lad who varnished the cabin woodwork had sprayed it everywhere, and the red droplets where just teak varnish!! Standing joke at work now.

P.S. Rob, I hope you have a speedy recovery mate I know how annoying it can be when you have a big bandage on your finger. Constantly catching it and not being able to work properly

im glad to say im making a good recovery. although i went in one side and right out the other i only grazed the bone and didnt damage anything badly.
like you said andy.. its the running about with the big bandage etc thats the killer. thankfully i went back to hospital yesterday and they renewed it with a much tidier one.

the one thing i cant get out my head is looking down and the drill completely through my finger and coming to a spinning halt still inside.
it was horrific! worse than the initial pain. like i said i managed to knock the drill into reverse and remove it. i think it was about 1 minute after the accident that the pain came… 🙁 it slow got worse and worse. i was almost vomiting out the car window getting taken to hospital.anyway.. now its healing good and i think all i should be left with is a numb patch, and some dents were it went in and out. “hopefuly” that is 🙄

Luckily I just went through the tip of my middle finger on my left hand down toward the nuckle, about 1/2″ (I’m glad it was my left hand, the right hand is very useful 😆 ) they did the x-rays and said I was lucky not to hit the bone.
The doctor said it would either sew itself back together or just stay a mess. I’m pleased to say with the help of the “medi-strips” its now fine. It was scary for a bit though. I still occasions of no feeling on that finger, apparantley I severed the nerve ending, thats probably why it didnt hurt at first!
