Could anyone offer any advice to the best way to start out doming? I’ve read up on quite a few posts that discuss the ins and outs of the process, but what is the most economical route to put together a few samples?

From what I understand so far there are ready-made syringes that are one-shot deals, use them once then throw away, then there are seperates that you mix in the quantities you need. Thats the long and short of my knowledge on the subject, other than the process of applying it, which as I understand is quite easy providing you’re careful.

Is it worth doing at all? I’ve been asked to make some sets of stickers for PCs in an unusual shape and whether I can dome them, more a casual request than an order, its just got me thinking it may be a useful addition to the stuff I do at the moment.

    Cheers, Dewi

Dewi, I would think the most cost effective way to start would be to contact some of the company’s that sell the kits and the doming machines, likes of mockridge etc and ask for some samples, display them and see if you get any serious interest. Trouble with buying some of the kits is that you buy the gun and 10 carts as a kit. The cartridges don’t have a very long shelf life at all so you need to ensure you have some work to do before you buy a kit really.

Like Martin says the kits are usually for 10 carts min. however if you do want to go ahead
with some samples I’d be willing to go halves you. This is something I’ve been looking at
    for a while.

Nice one, thanks for that Martin 😀 As you know, I’m a believer in jumping in with both feet, just not sure which way to jump with it at the moment, but the kits sound like a good starting point.

Pete, no worries, I can make you up some with your company logo, gives you a head start with it. We can have a chat on Wednesday 😀

One of the reasons I’m asking is I’m wondering if there’ll be suppliers at the show who can sell me the kit I need to get a start… may as well do something useful inbetween visits to the bar :lol1:

    Hi Dewi

Your best bet would be to start out with a hand doming kit which uses two part urethane carts. This is ample if you only get orders once and a while.
If things take off you will need to purchase a dispensing machine which you have the option of carts or the bulk feed systems.
The other thing to take into account is your work environment. The humidity needs to stay at around 40-50% to get the best result. Also dust can be a real menace to your domed label.

If you do a search on doming on UK sign boards you will find a lot of information from postings via Rodney. There will be info on the different types of doming resins etc.

    Cheers

Dewi, you can probably count me in for a couple of cartridges as well, that will really help to spread the cost.

The Mockridge 50ml kit is the best to start off with IMHO
Real easy to do – just make sure you let the domes cure in a warm and DRY!!!!!! environemnt (obviously flat)
A good environment like that is either your oven or its warming draw.
Dewi , you can charge a TON more if the thing is domed , up to 600 quid per sq meter!!! Apart from that , it really ehances the piece.
(like at that price a 2″ x 1″ domed decal = 80 pence or so)
You use 1ml of dome for every sq inch. Even in small qtys . the resins shouldnt cost more than 30-40 quid per litre/kg (ours cost 10) and you get a 800 sq inches from a litre. So on that 2″ x 1″ decal , your worst cost of resin is 10p.
DO NOT try do massive areas first , stuff like coins or small decals should be tackled.
Any questions , just ask , we been doming for donkeys years.
    Regards
    Rodney

Thanks for the info guys 😀 Seems to be a profitable addition to my existing lines, I’ve read a few times how you use them Rodney, its always had me more than a little interested. Now I have the shop the right way round and all the doors in the right place, I have more room and an extra workshop, so I can take something like this on without too much hassle.

Martin, I’ll lookout for some bargains at the Sign show, otherwise I’ll give you a ring towards the weekend. Pete lives pretty close to mine and he’s due a visit (hint, hint Pete! 😉 ) so we can probably all work something out so we can get a good deal.

Had a bit of a natter on the phone to a local company today and I mentioned the domed stickers to put on some of their products, it wasn’t the easiest sell, but they’re interested and want to see samples. Encouraging 😀

    Cheers, Dewi
