  • Does this sign need any sort of planning permission?

Posted by Gary Hazard on 11 July 2006 at 10:03

    Hi all

Had a request from one of my customers to supply
and fit a "small-ish" neon and/or illuminated sign of
    approximately 3ff x 1ft

It has been suggested that it could be placed just underneath
the existing traditional pub "swing sign"

    The size would probably be

    My question is….

    a) Does this sign need any sort of planning permission ?

    b) Does it need to be installed by some sort of qualified
electrician etc to be deemed legal ?

Any advice from people in this line of business or with any
experience in this matter would be most welcome

    Regards

    Gary

If it’s illuminated, it needs planning permission.

If you fit it, you need to get a registered electrician to connect it up.

I believe you can get away with the electrician bit if you supply it with a plug on the end.

Yes, it’s then classified as a ‘portable appliance’ if cable is 2m* and plug fitted.

If it’s a replacement for an already illuminated sign, then generally no approval reqd. so long as it’s specified as replacement signage & not new. 🙄

*gonna have to look up my regs book.

Just doing a job and fitting illuminated signs at a bistro. These are replacing previously installed illuminated signs but planning has said we have to re-apply so they can check if the originals were granted planning. I think it is just a ruse for the councils to charge extra for planning.
