  • Does anyone know of a guide for distance legibility?

    Hi

Does anyone know of a guide or general rule of thumb when considering the size a character has to be to be read at any given distance.

Customer wants a unit sign to be readable from a nearby railway.

I would guess it was 40-50 meters away.

for legibility, I have always recommended 1" of letter height for every 10′ of distance. So to read a sign 40′ away you would require 4" letters, thats minimum height by BTW.

I seem to re-call someone (I think it was John Childs) recently posted a file to download showing distance legibility v font heights. I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find it. Does anyone know where this was posted?

I found a really helpful chart on Ashby’s web site some time ago, and use it as my reference point.

http://www.ashbytrade.net/home/images/Brochure/overview.pdf It’s on page 33, along with another diamond – how deep you should plant sign posts.
