Does anyone know if you can fit an edge lit sign externally? I am after a way of lighting a swinging sign outside a pub but lit from inside, something like an acrylic panel maybe. I hope this makes sense and someone could help me I also need a supplier for said sign.

    Thanks in advance

i doubt any supplier will do a "swinging" edgelit sign.
however, with LED’s coming in all shapes and forms ide guess it would be pretty easy to knock up. however…. you will have to have a border frame of some sort. if not at top, then all round as one side will have to have the hidden LED’s. bit hard to explain, bit easy enough to acheive.

and yes, you can use these outside.

ide recon using miniumum of clear 10mm polycarb. LED’s incased at the top section shining down the interior of sign. the bracket/casing holding the LED’s could be fixed to stell thin cable, steel hoops or chain, allowing it to swing. from a projecting frame.

    Thanks Rob,

I’ve had a look round and found a supplier that might be able to make one up for me but I can’t call them to check until tuesday.

Will it be possible to make an edge lit sign that can be read from both sides? That part is confusing me at the moment.

edge lit signs are illuminated by a light source projected down the interior of a substrate such as clear perspex.
i sometimes engrave some. when you shoot the light down one edge, all the engraved texts edges are hit by the beam of light.
in the dark, viewed from the font. the outline of the text is illuminated.
hence the whole, "edge lit sign" scenario.
a double sided one "could" be achieved by splitting two 5mm clear perspex engraved sheets with a 1mm black metal separator.
this would work, but cost and time producing is doubled.
have it as a swing sign is possible, but looses that trim classic look with ugly double borders and the like.

personally, i think if the customer is wanting/asking all this… hes creating an expensive monster mate. hit him with some prices and steer clear…

    just my opinion. 😕

I’d echo everyting Rob has said, technically it’s possible to make the sign you describe but it’ll only be legible when it’s really dark and during the day it’s not going to be very effective at all. We worked with Etam a few years ago to trial some external edge lit signs and they were a dismal failure.

My opinion is to do exactly as Rob says, fire some (high) prices at your customer and let them come back to you.
