Depending on the size of the letters you could cover them with backing paper or similar and take a ‘rubbing’ of them before you remove, then use the rubbing as a guide.

@mitchelld….they are applied using stand off locators

usually fixed with nylon stand off locators, with a male part bonded to the back of the letter and the female part screwed to the wall, the letters push onto the female locators. (hope that makes sense?)

your idea should work – remove the letters and place an accurately cut oblong template over the holes ensuring the bottom or top of the template are level as you will need to use this same edge to check the template is level in the next room. I would be tempted to use apptape or paint mask both of which are fairly low tack.

Alternatively the male locators on the rear often have a pointy end so that you can realign the letters/logo on paper on a bench and with a firm press make an indent in the paper which you can mark thereafter with a pencil cross.

    Hope that makes sense

take signs off, place paper on old wall, mark holes that way through paper. Draw straight edge before you remove. Works perfectly
