Does anyone else have problems opening eps. & ai?
Posted by Nigel Hindley on 12 September 2008 at 16:33Does anyone else have problems opening the above file formats in Signlab? Sometimes they just drop in and open no problem, sometimes they drop in but have dotted outlines, sometimes these cut OK sometimes they need some node pushing first?
I have yet to find someone who knows why this is and to correct the file or avoid it. I’m assuming its ether the way the file i created or saved?
Does anyone know a way round it?

I think it is to do with the way the file was originally saved, before you imported into SL. If you have an image editing program, Photoshop or Corel you may be able to change some of the settings of the file.
I’m certain there are one or two people on here who will give a better answer.Steve

Probably happens with files that have come from MACs, I have found that sometimes the dotted line seems to be a grid and I have heard that Illustrator can create objects from guidlines. The problem with these is that if you delete them you can loose objects that you actually want. Illustrator will often create a duplicate of the logo, this can happen if the original file has a hairline or outline to it, this will have no fill only an outline and maybe the answer if your logo/graphic cuts twice.
I have seen this happen in Signlab and Corel, you can disable the fill, select and delete the duplicate in Signlab and in Corel there is a macro which will streamline this.

Its not just signlab it can happen in many third party programs when importing adobe files. They themselves may not have been created in an adobe program, but exported say from corel or quark etc.
I to would like to know what is the best way to save a file, that would be the most "universally" regognisedI advise if using signlab, that you also have illustrator on your system, as the files can open in signlab, and be completely different from the originals, especially line thickness, and clipping path issues

Illustrator is an expensive bit of kit to have just for checking files Peter, I reckon pdf is one of the best formats simply because you can see it as a reference in Reader and Signlab/Corel do a haldfdecent job of importing them. If I had to buy an extra bit of software I’d go for full Acrobat, I have had pdf not open correctly in Corel (mainly font issues) but if I open the pdf in Acrobat, save as EPS that imports into Draw no pronlem at all and includes font shapes and Pantone data.

Thanks for all the replies.
I have had some of the problems over time with some of the above, however a frequent problem i have and am having right now are fonts or text.
I have a job just now that simply requires text from illustrator and its just coming through as an un – cuttable outline so means some detail has gone and there is lots of work to be done with nodes etc.
I have tried opening directly, importing, cutting from illustrator and pasting into sign-lab etc but none with any success. So it isn’t just a Mac related thing though this is what I had thought some time ago (im working on a pc and this problem i have right now is created by me in illustrator and used on my pc in sign lab)
This happens more and more – but for instance when downloading any eps or Ai file from any website or recognized source they are always perfect ie they drag and drop in?
If anyone else has any idea it would help – and sounds like everyone too has come across this one!
Cheers,
Nigel
